In his ninth comedy special, Lewis Black tears into a country that is going nowhere at the speed of light. "Old Yeller" weaves the riotous tale of a country that is so strung out on ADD that it can't see straight. In his rabid attack, Mr. Black even turns on himself–and his entire generation. From cable television to the computer, from Facebook to Twitter, Mr. Black rages about the prison we've insanely created for ourselves. He snarls at the country's failure to find alternative energy sources while creating cell phones out of the realm of science fiction. He mauls our nation's leaders for their laughably inept handling of social security and health care–and failing to provide help on any level whatsoever. As Mr. Black puts it, "What are you going to do when the Democrats are dumb, the Republicans are stupid and the Tea Party doesn't even know what day it is?" He takes what makes us crazy and makes it funny. It's a night of live comedy you won't forget. . . but if you do, it's …

Sam Phillips didn't record anybody else the way he recorded Jerry Lee Lewis. With other artists, he pushed and prodded, taking his time to discover the qualities that made them uniquely human, but with Jerry Lee, he just turned the tape on and let the Killer rip. There was no need to sculpt because Lewis arrived at Sun Studios fully formed, ready to lean back and play anything that crossed his mind. Over the course of seven years, that's more or less how things were run at Sun: Lewis would sit at the piano and play, singing songs that were brought to him and songs that crossed his mind, and Sam never stopped rolling the tape.

This massive box consists of the first act of the Killer's career, the complete output from his 1956-1962 years at Sun Records, wherein a bible school dropout with a high country tenor, a ten-fingered demolition derby piano attack out of boogie-woogie, and a miscegenation-spurred penchant for pouring blues idioms into his hillbilly music puts him on the Rushmore of the Founding Fathers of Rock and Roll, along with Elvis and Chuck Berry.

Black Asteroid is the solo guise of Bryan Black, best known as one-half of industrial techno duo MOTOR. While MOTOR's work is vocal-based and more overtly influenced by the aggressive EBM sound of Nitzer Ebb and D.A.F., Black Asteroid focuses on the dancefloor, with distorted, driving techno beats and few, if any, vocals. Originally from Minneapolis, Black worked at Paisley Park Studios as a sound designer for Prince and was a member of '90s industrial groups H3llb3nt and Haloblack. He started MOTOR with former bandmate Olivier Grasset, and the duo released a string of successful albums on NovaMute, Shitkatapult, and Dim Mak, in addition to touring with Depeche Mode in 2009.

When Jerry Lee Lewis was recording for Sun records it was his most prolific period in my opinion and this great box set containing 128 of his best recordings is simply stunning. One of the best box sets out there. Each of the four discs contains plenty of vintage rock 'n' roll as well as a few country songs, an even some gospel and rhythm & blues ditties thrown in for good measure. Of course, all of the big hits are included, as well as some rare gems that will have you coming back for more. Also remarkable is the attention to detail in the beautiful booklet, which includes several terrific photos and a very informative biography. Also there's a very insightful commentary, complete with recording dates of every song in the collection.
