Paul, a divorced architect, marries Nichole, a woman from Paris. His teen daughter Jenny has fallen in with the English beatnik scene and likes to hang out in cave-like clubs to listen to jazz and rudimentary rock'n'roll. Jenny takes an immediate dislike to her step mother, who is not that much older than she, and goes out of her way to make life miserable for Nichole. When Jenny discovers that Nichole is a friend of one of the strippers from the dance hall across the street, she investigates and uses Nichole's sordid past to embarrass her father. Meanwhile Jenny attracts the lecherous eye of Kenny, the owner of the dance hall.

The Beat Generation was something of a catch-all phrase in the 1950s, which encompassed beatniks, hipsters, non-conformists counter-culture, bohemian hedonism, Greenwich Village folkies and writers like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Lucien Carr and William S. Burroughs. Musically, it touched many bases, from late night jazz to rock 'n' roll, via film noir, beat poetry, cool instros and unashamed novelty material. This eclectic compilation covers all these and more, making this perhaps the perfect soundtrack to an imaginary 'Beat Generation' documentary.

For British girl-pop, 1960s Decca is a goldmine. The label had its A&R hounds sniffing into every nook and cranny of the British Isles, signing up Midlands schoolgirls (the Orchids), London folk club denizens (Dana Gillespie, Beverley), former child actresses (Adrienne Poster, Sandra Barry), Liverpudlian girl groups (the Vernons Girls, the Satin Bells), soulful northerners (Elkie Brooks, Truly Smith) and Scots (Lulu, Barry St John), well-connected Chelsea girls (Louise Cordet, Twinkle, Marianne Faithfull), Merseybeat wannabes (Beryl Marsden), talent show winners (Billie Davis, Babbity Blue, Jean Martin) and even transient Americans (Goldie & the Gingerbreads) – all featured in this gorgeously packaged collection.

Beat music, British beat, or Merseybeat (after bands from Liverpool and nearby areas beside the River Mersey) is a pop and rock music genre that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. Beat music is a fusion of rock and roll (mainly Chuck Berry guitar style and the midtempo beat of artists like Buddy Holly), doo-wop, skiffle and R&B. The genre provided many of the bands responsible for the British Invasion of the American pop charts starting in 1964, and provided the model for many important developments in pop and rock music, including the format of the rock group around lead, rhythm and bass guitars with drums. The Beat Of The Pops - excellent selection of beat tracks.

Diddley wore huge glasses, sported impossibly loud check jackets and wielded a distinctive rectangular guitar - but the thing that really made him stand out from the crowd was his trademark ‘hambone’ guitar riff. Even though Bo didn’t exactly invent the riff, he definitely made it his own and parlayed it into an entire career, represented here by the eponymous Bo Diddley, the romantic pleas of Pretty Thing, the yearning Mona, and the boastful strut of Gunslinger. All of which prove what an amazing range of material could be squeezed out of just one beat. But Bo couldn’t keep that beat all to himself, because it was highly infectious. The rest of this 2-CD set is crammed with fine examples of those who fell under Bo’s influence, which amounted to pretty much everybody who was anybody at the time.

In 1965, when the group was still together, he embarked on a solo career that would eventually eclipse the success of The Browns. Jim Ed Brown had his greatest success in the late 1970's, when he regularly performed duets with Helen Cornelius.

The film is a day in the life of a young artist, Jean Michel Basquiat, who needs to raise money to reclaim the apartment from which he has been evicted. He wanders the downtown streets carrying a painting he hopes to sell, encountering friends, whose lives (and performances) we peek into. He finally manages to sell his painting to a wealthy female admirer, but he's paid by check. Low on cash, he spends the evening wandering from club to club, looking for a beautiful girl he had met earlier, so he'll have a place to spend the night. Downtown 81 not only captures one of the most interesting and lively artists of the twentieth century as he is poised for fame, but it is a slice of life from one of the most exciting periods in American culture, with the emergence of new wave music, new painting, hip hop and graffiti.
