Levy, Alexandre, Brazilian composer of French descent; b. Sao Paulo, Nov. 10, 1864; d. there, Jan. 17, 1892. He studied harmony with Emile Durand at the Paris Cons. His compositions include a Sym., which received a Columbus Celebration prize in 1892, Comala, symphonic poem, Suite brasileira for Orch., chamber music, and piano works (Schumanniana, suite, Allegro appassionato, etc.). Although his music was steeped in the European Romantic tradition and his technique was limited, he appears an important figure in Brazilian music because of his contribution to the nationalist movement in music. He was one of the earliest Brazilian composers to use native folk material in instrumental works.

A Windfall of Musicians: Hitler's Emigres and Exiles in Southern California by Dorothy Lamb Crawford
Yale University Press | June 23, 2009 | English | ISBN: 0300127340 | 336 pages | PDF | 3 MB

This book is the first to examine the brilliant gathering of composers, conductors, and other musicians who fled Nazi Germany and arrived in the Los Angeles area. Musicologist Dorothy Lamb Crawford looks closely at the lives, creative work, and influence of sixteen performers, fourteen composers, and one opera stage director, who joined this immense migration beginning in the 1930s. Some in this group were famous when they fled Europe, others would gain recognition in the young musical culture of Los Angeles, and still others struggled to establish themselves in an environment often resistant to musical innovation.
