Recorded between 1966 and 1971, these four LPs presented here on two CDs represent Baden Powell at his best. Roberto Baden Powell de Aquino was one of Brazil's greatest guitarists of the Bossa Nova Generation. On these recordings Powell plays some of his own best known compositions: Canto de Ossanha, Samba Triste, Samba em Preludio, E de Lei… He plays classics by other Brazilian writers: Manha de Carnival, Das Rosas, Dindi… He plays some jazz standards: Round Midnight, All the Things You are… He also shows the influence of classical music, Especially J S Bach - Invencao em 7 1/2 (double tracked with one part at double speed.) The performances display superb sense of timing and great improvisational skills. Mostly he is accompanied by a Brazilian rhythm section but on Poema he uses a jazz rhythm section. This is the essential Baden Powell.
Os Afro-Sambas was originally recorded in 1966, while this one without Vinicius de Moraes, was done by Baden Powell, Quarteto em cy (as the original), and others nearly quarter century later. Os Afro-Sambas is certainly one of the most important works of contemporary Brazilian Music truly reflecting the transition period from the stylish Bossa Nova of the late 50's to the revolutionary Tropicalia of the late 60's. Eight of the eleven compositions are the same of the original one, while two are also compostions of Baden and Vinicius from the same period and the opening was made by Baden alone specially for this recording.
Album singular and rare by Brazilian guitarist and composer Baden Powell de Aquino (Rio de Janeiro, 1937-2000). The CD is a reissue merging two independent studio albums, 'Samba triste' (1975) and 'Tristeza' (1976). From the latter has been deleted the song 'Así danço samba'. It seems that the topic 'Casa velha' is taken from another recording session (from the album of the same title). In all these recordings, of which 7 are works of his own creation, Baden amply demonstrates that musicality and creative and performing imagination are even more important than the sheer technical virtuosity on guitar.
