This album is John's tribute to one of his blues heroes, the late, great Freddie King. King was a blues guitar pioneer from the mid-50's through to his tragically early death in the mid-70's and he influenced everyone from Peter Green to Dave Edmunds to Stevie Ray Vaughan and probably most of all Eric Clapton, who produced and played on King's final album. In The Palace Of The King features John Mayall's take on his personal selection of Freddie King favorites and is a fabulous combination of two true blues legends.

The year is 1969, and the music world is in a frenzy. Otis Redding tells us it s groovin time, Jim Morrison demands to be touched, B.B. King laments that the thrill is gone, and while Janis Joplin encourages him to try a little bit harder, Crosby Stills & Nash have boarded the Marrakesh express. It is at this very moment that Natalia M. King decides to be born because she is the kind of woman who decides that life is the color of her music.

Tampa Red's influential later recordings for RCA Victor (1945-53) have never been officially reissued on CD and rarely on LP, yet are a crucial element in the post-war blues canon. Many of his songs were covered by B. B. King, Muddy Waters and other top bluesmen. They feature the majestic piano of latter-day Elmore James sideman, Johnny Jones and include the harmonica of Big Walter 'Shakey' Horton and Sonny Boy Williamson II. There are four previously unissued tracks but none are available on authorised CD, not even on OOC releases.

MCA Special Products' "Got My Mojo Working" is a ten-track sampler of B.B. King's earliest recordings. Although this is by no means definitive, it is effective, since it contains such songs as "Sweet Sixteen," "Paying the Cost to Be the Boss" and "Confessing the Blues." As a result, it's one of the better budget-line B.B. King compilations on the market.

B.B. King: "AIN'T NOBODY HOME" contains some of my best recordings over the past 40 years. "Everyday I Have The Blues", and "Sweet Little Angel", were taken from my 1965 album "LIVE AT THE REGAL", which many music critics still think is one Of the best live albums ever recorded. And who am I to argue with that!

By 1967, King had refined his singing and guitar style (which were always intertwined) to a fine point. What was just beginning to emerge during this period was King the showman, the singer with a story to tell his audience; sometimes a sad story, sometimes an angry one, occasionally even a downright mean one. Nowhere was this more apparent than in live performance. Here he's captured in concert in Chicago, home of the blues and the ideal place to testify to the congregation. From "Tired of Your Jive" to "I Know What You're Puttin' Down" to the unequivocal "Baby Get Lost," B.B. lets his audience in on the ups and downs of romance in no uncertain terms, both through his impassioned vocals and characteristically stinging guitar. The effect is both cathartic and awe-inspiring.

His October visit to New Yorks A&R Studios was just one of numerous dates that filled King s diary to bursting point that year.
