An electrifying stew of hard rock, biker rock, Southern rock, and keyboard rock (we're talking 1983 after all), Nemesis may easily be Axe's defining statement: The band wants nothing more than airwave domination and to come into your town to help you party down. Ripped opener "Heat in the Street" bears a similar title to "Rock 'N' Roll Party in the Streets," Axe's biggest-ever hit from their previous offering, Offering (the CD reissue erroneously christens the song "Heat in the Night" but all that matters is Nemesis made it to disc), yet despite the obvious leitmotif, nothing can touch this red-hot, hard luck, fugitive tale which takes every right turn while crashing and burning in a league with the immortal Motörhead; Axe is always geared for the radio, though, throwing in keys and vocoder for a walloping slab of two-ton American rock.

Essential: A masterpiece of progressive rock music.
THE POWER AND THE GLORY is one of Gentle Giant’s more “difficult” albums, there’s no doubt about that. It’s also one of my favourites from this highly inventive and influential English prog band.
Dating from 1974, this concept piece delves — with fitting cynicism — into the political experience, and the compromise, corruption, betrayal and egotism that go hand-in-hand with high office. (The cover, depicting a glowering, playing card king, is a classic.)

Little Axe was the alias of Skip McDonald, a blues performer whose list of credits also included work on some of rap music's most influential records. Born Bernard Alexander in Dayton, Ohio in 1949, McDonald learned blues guitar from his father, and by the age of ten was already playing professionally with area jazz musicians. By age 12, his focus had shifted to doo wop, and he also played in a gospel quartet; after high school, he and several friends relocated to New York City, where they formed a group dubbed the Entertainers and toured extensively throughout the East Coast.

Axe were a British psych band led by acid-rock guitar player Tony Barford and graced by Vivienne Jones' ethereal vocals. In 1970, they recorded a demo album and this is the first ever straight reissue of this artifact, as the previous "reissue" on the Kissing Spell label was altered without the band's consent. Heavy psych and acid-rock sounds full of raw, fuzzed-out guitars and dreamy female vocals. Four original songs plus a long cover of Love's "A house is not a motel". Carefully remastered from an original copy (master tapes were lost). Includes a CD with the same album plus a bonus 8 minute video track featuring colour silent footage of Crystalline/Axe playing live in 1970 with audio from the acetate added.

The original Alice Cooper band broke up in 1974 after releasing seven great albums. The lead singer Vincent Furnier started his remarkable solo career in 1975 and he adopted Alice Cooper as his name. In 1977, three former members of the Alice Cooper band formed a band called Billion Dollar Babies…

The voice of the singer is soft, pleasant and untalented in classical sense, though she hits to the key well and I Iike her voice really much. The singing is present only in more calmer moments of the songs, so the band gets much instrumental space to hit the harder acid rock gear on, and the do it very well. The compositions are quite simple, more like basic frames for free playing…
