Carlo Ambrogio Lonati, a flamboyant character from Italys violin scene, was born in Milan and moved to Rome at age 25, where he became known as the hunchback of the Queen Christina of Sweden. His stature predestined him as a singer for roles of gnomes and dwarves in Romes opera scene. Corelli played for a few years in the orchestra directed by Lonati, its concertmaster.

Romanus Weichlein was born in Linz to parents who were musicians and who gave him a good musical education. He received his first formal training at the abbey of Lambach and entered the Benedictine Order in 1671. He then went to Salzburg where he got acquainted with Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber. He returned to Lambach, and later became chaplain and musical director of the Benedictine convent of Nonnberg in Salzburg. His oeuvre consists of twelve sonatas for strings and a collection of seven mass settings.

William Jackson of Exeter (17301803) was a painter and writer as well as a composer, but he has been, until now, something of a hidden treasure. As Timothy Roberts writes in his introduction to this first album of Jacksons music, his songs are rooted in English traditions, and if his harmonies rarely move beyond those of Corelli and Handel, Jacksons emphasis on sensibility also brings hints of early Romanticism. One contemporary observed that His melodies were pure and natural, resulting in music that is both elegant and charming. This recording brings two esteemed early-music stars into the Toccata Classics catalogue: Dame Emma Kirkby and Charles Daniels.

Ars Pro Vita are two brothers. They live in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Ars Pro Vita is the result of a flood of ideas to realize projects which subjects may always reflect their views on life, human nature and its idiosyncrasies. Music is an art form. Life needs art to stay alive. Their aim is to spread our music as a form of art to serve life. Art For Life. Ars Pro Vita.
Minor is about freedom and its absence. The scenery could take place today, but it was set at the time of free people, kidnappers, large wooden ships and total lack of the concept of human rights. Along the songs Minor tells about life, affection, fear, suffering and his quest in search to escape from slavery. Minor is timeless. Minor screams for an inherent value of life. Minor could be me, could be you, could be anyone. Minor wants to tell his story… so that it doesn't happen ever again.

Works for percussion and orchestra can be timbral gimmickry from the workshops of compositional Avantgardists; or they are rhythmically inspired by the nature of the solo instrument. However, they can also be full of melody and feeling. This is true of Avner Dormans Spices, Perfumes, Toxins! a concerto for two percussionists and orchestra. Instead of hailing from a theoretical ivory tower, this work adheres to the basic form of the solo concerto. In spite of this, every note speaks the language of modernism while steering clear of typically engineered moments.

On this release, Paul Hillier and Ars Nova Copenhagen continue their exploration of Danish vocal music. The main work here, Line Tjornhojs Vox Reportage, was composed in close co-operation with the artists, and weaves various sources together including 1981 Nobel laureate Elias Canetti, Chelsea Manning, and Rabiahal Adawiyya (8th-century Iraq) to create a reportage on the nature of humanity over the past thousand years. In Carl Nielsens Three Motets, Renaissance polyphony and the composers more personal style are molded into something fresh and powerful; the Swedish Romantic composer Stenhammarsets Danish texts, while Holmboesets British border ballads. Everything about this album crosses borders of one kind or another!

Several masses with large orchestration attest to the outstanding compositional skills of the Salzburg master Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704) in coping with large ensembles. As usual in Salzburg, Biber expects polychoral performances. The church music at the Salzburg cathedral drew its orientation from the performance practice in Venice. The Missa Alleluia was probably composed after 1690 and certainly before 1698, because a manuscript was made in Kremsmunster that year. The original score and sheets from Salzburg are lost. Excellent copies have been preserved at the Upper Austrian abbey at Kremsmunster: they serve as a basis for the present recording. Biber has fully exploited the possibilities of Baroque Instrumentation in the Missa Alleluia: a chorus with 2 sopranos, 2 altos, 2 tenors and 2 bass voices grants him a large number of combinations of voices and thus constant change of timbre. The strings choir also has six parts, with both violins often conducted virtuosically. A chorus with 3 trumpets and 2 cornetti is even surpassed in tonal mass by the chorus composed of 2 clarini, 4 trumpets, and timpani. This large number of trumpets emphasizes the cheerful character of the work and is very luxurious by Austrian standards.
