Directed by Lasse Hoile (Steven Wilson/Opeth), Distant Satellites A Sort Of Home Coming is a stunning concert film of Anathema s homecoming show on March 7th 2015 in the spectacular setting of the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Anathema have spent the vast majority of their career making music that defies description. Formed in the mid 90s, they have risen to become one of the UK s most cherished and critically acclaimed rock bands…

The Silent Enigma represents a turning point in Anathema's career (it is the first album to feature guitarist Vincent Cavanagh singing lead vocals, replacing Darren White) and sees the start of the band's gradual progression from doom metal to a softer style of rock. The album was originally titled Rise Pantheon Dreams, a title later used by White for his post-Anathema project The Blood Divine.

With each release since the mid-'90s, Anathema have pushed their boundaries to the breaking point, creating a prog pop sound of their own. After the groundbreaking – and universally celebrated – Weather Systems in 2012, it was fair to wonder just where else they could go. That question is answered with Distant Satellites…

Another exquisite package from Music Video Distributors the Anathema disc includes websites, logo, photo gallery, interview, bonus video and desktop images. The 14 concert tracks are displayed with the index so the Pink Floyd fans can jump right to the final track of "Comfortably Numb." As Floyd cover bands are proliferating, it's kind of nice to hear an actual group that is its own entity do a cover along with their other material. And they do a nice rock & roll job on it, not to mention the fact that their music runs a sort of parallel to big Pink. The four-page booklet doesn't add much, it's just a slick little extra. But the concert footage is wonderfully filmed and the sound is delightfully eerie. The main concert was recorded live in March of 2006 at the Metalmania Festival.

The last three years have been very kind to Anathema, this, after a well-documented period of studio inactivity from 2004 to 2009 that netted only a remake album (Hindsight) and nothing more. So with the momentum of last year’s well-received Weather Systems behind them, the Brits took to Bulgaria to record Universal, a full-blown concert film that showcases the band at their most grandiose and earnest. And since we can’t write anything about the band without mentioning their glorious early-career metal days: This should do even more to pipe down the calls for Anathema to make a sonic retreat.

This album was the definite transitional one in the career of this band hailing from Liverpool. After two full-length releases plus one EP having been quite influential in doom metal they've changed here drastically their sound towards more atmospheric and psychedelic rock/metal with a strong Floydian touch.
