Ralph Alessi is well established as one of the very best progressive jazz trumpet players and composers. While elusive as a melodic notesmith, it is the sheer intelligence of his music that is so thought-provoking and singularly unique. In tandem with saxophonist Peter Epstein, Alessi has concocted some truly original, spectacular music over the years, and this recording with his ensemble Modular Theatre stays on that not so straight or narrow path, weaving in complex modes and harmonies that demand the challenged listener to pay close attention. The difference from previous recordings is Alessi's use of a vocalist, but in this case not a singer.

"Ludlow Garage" captures a concert performance from the early Allman Brothers Band, recorded in Cincinnati in April 1970 but not issued until 1990. The highlight of this live album is the 45 minute version of Mountain Jam, which occupied one entire disc of the original double-vinyl release.

Much as the current Allman Brothers lineup had coalesced in 2003, the ensemble that came together in 1989 for the twentieth anniversary box set Dreams (Polydor, 1989) tour had tightened considerably (minus keyboardist /vocalist Johnny Neel) by the time they decided to engage in their first extended run at New York's Beacon Theatre and record themselves for a live album. Play All Night: Live At the Beacon Theatre consists of performances captured on March 10 & 11 in 1992 and over the course of its two discs, effectively supplants the concert pieces of that era captured on "An Evening With".

The debut self-titled album from the Allman Brothers Band came out in late 1969, recorded only a few months after the band was formed. These songs were honed on the road, which allowed the Allmans to record and mix the entire record in only two weeks. Among the highlights is the original version of the seminal Whipping Post, which would take on a life of its own following the 20 minute live version on the Fillmore East concert album released two years later. This Deluxe edition includes a second disc of the entire album, remixed and re-released in 1973 under the title "Beginnings".
