Rock & Roll / Rhythm & Blues / Louisiana / New Orleans

In the mid-50s, as rock’n’roll swept across the USA, the Cajun youth of South Louisiana and South East Texas absorbed the R&B sounds emanating from New Orleans. This was reflected in their music, making it so distinctive. They thrilled to the sound of Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis and Huey Smith and performed their songs with the bands they formed, while the area’s new breed of songwriters – Bobby Charles, Jimmy Donley, Jivin’ Gene, etc – assimilated the Crescent City style in their work. Swamp pop was born, although the genre had yet to be named.

Rock & Roll / Rhythm & Blues / South Louisiana / South East Texas / Cajun

The ninth release in the “…By The Bayou” series brings you some hot rockers from South Louisiana and Southeast Texas, an area where Cajun culture has had a strong influence over its music – and never more so than in the heyday of real rock’n’roll, the 1950s. Rock’n’roll was a hybrid of C&W and R&B right across the USA, but in Cajun country the influences were more specific; the country music was from Texas, the R&B from New Orleans, and into this mix went rockabilly from Memphis via Shreveport and Cajun music. In this exciting compilation you will find all of those influences to varying degrees.

Rock & Roll / Rhythm & Blues / Blues / South Louisiana

Letting the good times roll again, with this second visit to the dynamic South Louisiana R&B scene there is no waver in the quality of music. We’ve added the work of another Louisiana record man, Sam Montel from Baton Rouge, to the vast stockpile of material in the vaults of J.D. Miller, Eddie Shuler, Floyd Soileau and Jake Graffagnino. Sam (originally Montalbano) got into the music business when his childhood friend Jimmy Clanton hit the charts. Sam became his road manager and the whole scene got into his blood. He decided to start his own record label when only 18 years old. His first release, Lester Robertson’s ‘My Girl Across Town’, is included here, as is a previously unissued outing from Robertson.

Ace's spin-off of their Golden Age Of American Rock 'n' Roll series - Chartbusters USA - is always a popular and strong selling line. As with Golden Age, Chartbusters has its own sub-series of Special Editions. This month Ace add to that sub-series with a long overdue Special Country Edition, featuring Country chart hits that also crossed over to the Hot 100 between 1963 and 1970. Many of the genre's greatest names are featured here, along with some of country's most successful songs of all time. Every one of these tracks made the Country Top 5, and 14 of them reached # 1.

Rhythm & Blues / Blues

Stupendously rare or unissued New Orleans R&B and blues in incomparable sound quality. Despite being based in Linden, New Jersey, DeLuxe recorded all across the USA in the company’s formative period in an attempt to score hits. DeLuxe was the first indie to tap into what was going on in the Crescent City in the years immediately following WWII. The label’s biggest find during that time was Roy Brown, the subject of two CDs in our “King & DeLuxe Acetates” series. In “Beef Ball Baby!” you can hear the surviving acetates of some of the other highly talented people DeLuxe recorded in New Orleans in the acetate era.

Using the same exacting criteria, this concept has now been logically extended into the mid to late-60s in the form of an exciting new series titled Chartbusters USA. Unlike the majority of 60s hits compilations that have usually been thrown together randomly by some marketing department, Chartbusters USA functions both on a historical level and as a superlative listening experience. It is a proud thoroughbred in a market teeming with mongrel product. One glance at the track listing will tell you all you need to know.

Like volume one, this is a high-grade assortment of hits, all but one by American artists, from the five years or so following the Beatles' invasion of the United States (though a couple of the tracks are from 1963). If there's one thing that might keep some listeners from lavishing unrestrained praise on this collection, it's that there's no real theme other than they were all, or virtually all, big hits and all pretty good. (You can't even say that the theme is American pop and rock, due to the inclusion of the Zombies' "Time of the Season.") Naturally, part of what makes rock and '60s rock in particular interesting is its diversity, and this 29-song anthology covers a lot of bases. Among them are folk-rock (the Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man"), blue-eyed soul (the Rascals' "Good Lovin'," the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'"), Motown (Martha & the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street"), psychedelia (the Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love"), hard rock (Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride"), hot rod (Jan & Dean's "Little Old Lady from Pasadena"), and garage rock (the Syndicate of Sound's "Little Girl," the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie"). Plus there's good old pop/rock in the Turtles, one-shots like John Fred's "Judy in Disguise" and the Newbeats' "Bread & Butter," and even a little non-rock in Mongo Santamaria's "Watermelon Man" and Lalo Schifrin's "Mission: Impossible." Nothing here's real rare; even the few low-charting items, like Jerry Jeff Walker's original version of "Mr. Bojangles" and the Gants' cover of "Road Runner," aren't hard to get elsewhere. But if you're not a specialist collector yet are on the lookout for '60s oldies anthologies, this series and this volume are recommended above most others. That's due to the exceptional quantity (29 songs on a single disc), consistent high quality (even the novelties and light pop tunes here are fun guilty pleasures), and packaging (excellent annotation provides the stories, some relatively little known, behind each track).
