Hearing or performing music comes closest in the range of human activity to a visceral connection to the past. As long as we have notation and knowledge of how to interpret it, we can effectively experience something like our ancestors did when they sang the same music. Of course, our 20th-century sensibilities and knowledge–or lack thereof–prevent us from sharing identical responses, but as with the music on this disc, when we hear it we are in some way transported to another place. We know a completely different sound world from our own; we know that the accepted order of certain things was different. And we also know that in many ways people haven't changed. Machaut's music conveys a spirituality–both joyful and contemplative–that's as true in its impact as it must have been 600 years ago, a point made ever so clearly by these especially vibrant and vital performances.

"The work is polychoral, and almost made for multichannel recordings. (…) Sonically this is a splendid disc; in multichannel making the most of the rich acoustic signature of the church to add bloom to the voices and instruments, and presenting the spatial organisation of 'Songs' in a unique and convincing way. (…) Lovers of fine choral singing and contemporary vocal music will surely enjoy this fine disc, which ably demonstrates the versatility of Hillier and his forces." ~sa-cd.net

The subtitle of "A Bridge of Dreams," a 2011 album with Ars Nova Copenhagen and Paul Hillier, is "a cappella Music from the Pacific Rim," and it includes the works of composers from Australia, New Zealand, California, and China, all of which draws in part, if not entirely, on non-Western musical traditions. Lou Harrison left the accompaniment for his Mass for Saint Cecilia's Day open-ended and here Andrew Lawrence-King provides a discreet undergirding using medieval harp, psaltery, and hurdy-gurdy. It bears a strong resemblance to Medieval plainchant mass in its predominantly monophonic, melismatic writing, and its modal character. The modes, though, are Harrison's own, based on traditional Indonesian and Chinese scales. The mass is a beautifully expressive, immediately engaging piece that reveals a fresh facet of the composer's brilliantly expansive imagination.

…Paul Hillier is arguably the finest living conductor of spiritual choral music, a conductor with a complete mastery of the technique of singing and a consummate understanding of the transcendence of music. The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir is probably the best Baltic choir, a chorus with the sonorous depths of the best Russian choirs, the supple strength of the best Scandinavian choirs, plus the soulful longing of the best choruses in the world. And, of course, Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil is beyond all argument the greatest, the deepest, the most transcendent choral work ever composed by a Russian and one of the highest musical embodiments of humanity's spirituality. Together, Hillier and the Estonians turn in a performance of the All-Night Vigil of supreme musicality and sublime spirituality, a performance to convert the unconverted and bring the apostate back to belief. Harmonia Mundi captures the performance in sound that can only be described as stupendous.
