The Novachord is a gargantuan, entirely tube based, 72-note polyphonic synthesizer with oscillators, filters, VCAs, envelope generators and even frequency dividers. We sampled every one of the 72 notes on this beast - not just once, but over and over, with different settings each time.

Back in the 1930s, there was a man called Laurens Hammond, an electronics engineer, inventor and innovator. At the age of 14, he had designed an automatic transmission mechanism for motor cars (which was rejected by Renault!) and later would invent, in 1922, a 3D movie playback system as well as a clock motor. However, he is best known for the patent he took out in 1934 for a tonewheel organ which was to become, of course, the B3 and C3 and various other models.

The First Synthesiser. It is a little known fact, but the worlds first commercially available synthesizer was designed by the Hammond Organ Company in 1938 and put into full production from 1938 to 1942. The Novachord is a gargantuan, entirely tube based, 72 note polyphonic synthesizer with oscillators, filters, VCAs, envelope generators and even frequency dividers. The first instrument was delivered to President Franklin D. Roosevelt on Jan. 30, 1940 as a birthday present, but despite this auspicious start, the 500 lb instrument struggled commercially.

The haunting sounds of the Hammond Novachord have always intrigued us here at HS Towers. Made from over a hundred valves, thousands of capacitors and miles of hand sewn wiring looms and built in 1939, it was several decades ahead of its time … the world's first polyphonic synthesiser housed in a beautiful, cherrywood cabinet…

Antique and old junk shops can be great places to rummage round in, especially the little back street ones run by some eccentric, doddery old bloke in a waistcoat and bow tie. There are loads of them in Britain and our intrepid explorers are never far from one, stumbling across little gems for 're-purposing'. And they have found a real belter in the latest.

Some years ago, an old friend of mine - Dan McCullough (not to be confused with Dan, Dan, the Novachord man) - sent me some samples from a brightly coloured, 8-voice analogue polysynth, made in Japan and named after a planet (sorry to be vague but although it's perfectly kosher to sample an analogue synth, one has to be be very careful with regard to manufacturer and products names - I am sure you get the gist though!). I call it JayPea…
