After destroying the ninja schools, the evil despot Nobunaga Oda (Tomisaburo Yakayama) proceeds to track down and crucify the remaining ninja fighters. Goemon Ishikawa (Raizo Ichikawa) escapes with his new wife Maki (Shiho Fujimura) but is unable to remain neutral. He joins a rebel faction in a new province and sublimates his personal desire for vengeance to the will of its leader. Using stealth, false messages and other forms of trickery, Goemon plays three enemies off one another – Oda, another high born feudal leader and a warrior lord (So Yamamura) cruelly mistreated by Oda. The payoff comes when the warrior lord is maneuvered into attacking Oda. Goemon sneaks into the battle to finally extract his personal revenge. But disaster soon follows. The new feudal leader steps aside to let two warring lords fight over who will attack the rebel fortress. Goemon and Maki elect to stay with the rebels, as a siege forces them into starvation.

I suppose many of us would have loved the romanticism associated with ninjas, with their famed skills of invisibility, swordsmanship, cunning and a whole host of weaponry and gadgets that add to their element of surprise. If you'd think you know a lot of their modus operandi, then perhaps The Ninjas, aka Shinobi No Mono, would contribute to that wealth of knowledge, and at the same time dispel some of the myths and stories that add to the stature of these masked assassins.
If you'd wonder what a ninja does when out of his mask, then the film would have painted a rather mundane picture of the practicing ninjas, who hone their skills in enclaves, and frankly look no more like your usual Samurais, except sans status, and honing their skills ala rebels in hiding at their fortified base, and being skilled assassins for hire to Samurais who need someone to do their dirty work for them (yes, even back then you can outsource your dirty laundry), as they themselves are bounded by the honor code of bushido.

Set sometime in feudal Japan when real ninjas actually existed, this black and white film from Japan is a good primer for anyone interested in a bit of history regarding ninjas. Certainly more stealth oriented than Franco Nero in white jammies and more realistic, the portrayal of a ninjas role in society is made clear and you’ll find no sensationalism here.

This old black and white movie is amazingly fast paced and entertaining once the assassins make their moves on the target, the future Japanese Shogun. The manhunt scene in the woods is just an amazing sequence of action–that stays on the ground, as opposed to Ang Lee's sense of action in the infamous Crouching Tiger and Dancing Ballerina. This movie also portrays the stricter sides of the code of men of endurance (literal translation of ninja). An exemplar scene shows a wounded ninja, silently and quickly wiping his blood off the spearhead that ran through the ceiling and his thigh in order to hide his presence. As Saizo matures, he grows out of his material attachments and sees what is essential to shinobi (the way of the ninja). The ruses that the target and the assassin use on each other make for good plot twists and the crucial question on what it means to live by the code–does the ninja die for the mission, or does he endure the failure?–is answered splendidly.

According to history, Goemon Ishikawa was boiled alive after a failed assassination attempt on Toyotomi Hideyoshi (the man who unified Japan in the late 16th century). The problem is that this fact gets in the way of yet another Shinobi movie and at the end of the second film (the one immediately preceding this one) you see Ishikawa about to be tossed into the pot of boiling oil. The film makers get around this by saying that the man who was boiled was NOT Ishikawa but a double who was willing to pretend to be him. While not exactly believable, this worked well enough and the movie seems to be more a "what if" sort of film.

Willie Nelson has been a prolific singer and recording artist since the 1970s, but the songwriter who penned hits for Ray Price, Patsy Cline, Billy Walker, and Johnny Cash, among others, hasn't issued an album of predominantly original material since 1996. Band of Brothers ends the drought. Its 14 selections include nine new songs by Nelson (with producer Buddy Cannon) and a handful of fine covers. Opener "Bring It On" is a honky tonk waltz that offers wisdom by someone who has lived through plenty as he looks eternity squarely in the eye. He is in excellent voice as Mickey Raphael's harmonica moans to underscore his lyric. Nelson delivers his first guitar solo on Trigger (his nylon-stringed instrument). His playing, with its unique phrasing, has always been underrated and here it evokes the blues. His love songs have always been highlights in his catalog. "I Thought I Left You" is in 4/4, with a slow processional pace adorned with slippery steel and piano. The lost romance portrayed in the waltz "Send Me a Picture" is another clear standout; a sighing pedal steel and Raphael's mid-register wail echo every sung line.
