"The argument is cleverly-constructed - it strikes me as one of the most fresh and incisive contributions to the burgeoning clash of civilizations literature that I have seen, and is likely to attract widespread notice and comment. - T.J. Winter, D.Phil. Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge; Pursuing vision in a pragmatic world by focusing on opportunity rather than threat is the most challenging of all tasks. Naveed Sheikh's new book does this better than anything I have ever read. Essential reading for policy advisers after 11 September '01. - Robert Dickson Crane, J.D. Former US Ambassador to the UAE, President, Center for Policy Research; An important contribution to the understanding of post Caliphatic international Muslim politics. It sees through the religious semantics and unveils the objectives of realpolitik behind the main movers of the OIC. - Sahib Mustaqim Bleher, MIL Secretary General, Islamic Party of Britain; A necessary corrective for anyone disposed to believe that Huntington's Clash of Civilizations has an empirical basis, or that Islam is a simple and unified community. - Sir Roger Tomkys, KCMG, DL Former UK Ambassador to Bahrain and Syria, President, British Society for Middle East Studies

Joy Division is one of the definitive bands from the rock culture. With their dark poetic inception and a sound marked by a new way of thinking about how music should be created, the Manchester band served as a model for countless artists. Today, just as it marks 35 years of the death of Ian Curtis (the legendary singer and lyricist of the group) The Many Faces Of Joy Division shows the hidden world behind the group, their rare recordings, side projects, their influences and the Manchester scene where the band bloomed. With a wonderful cover art, remastered sound and extensive liner notes, The Many Faces of Joy Division is an album not only for fans but for anyone who wants to understand the influence (and enjoy the music) of a truly transcendent bad, which made beauty out of sadness.
The Modern Neighbors of Tutankhamun: History, Life, and Work in the Villages of the Theban West Bank

The Modern Neighbors of Tutankhamun: History, Life, and Work in the Villages of the Theban West Bank By Kees van der Spek

Until their recent demolition, the colorful mud-brick hamlets of al-Qurna village, situated among the Noble Tombs of the Theban Necropolis on the Luxor West Bank, were home to a vibrant community.Inhabiting a place of intensive Egyptological research for over two centuries, it was inevitable that Qurnawis should become part of the history of Egyptology and the development of archaeological practice in the Theban Necropolis. But they have mostly been regarded as laborers for the excavation teams or dealers in the illicit antiquities trade. The modern people inhabiting the ancient burial grounds have themselves rarely been considered.By demonstrating the multiplicity of economic activities that are carried out in al-Qurna, this study counters the villagers' stereotypical representation as tomb robbers, and restores an understanding of who they are as people living their lives in the shadow of valued cultural heritage.

Drift Smoke: Loss And Renewal In A Land Of Fire (repost)

Drift Smoke: Loss And Renewal In A Land Of Fire (Environmental Arts and Humanities) by David J. Strohmaier
University of Nevada Press | August 29, 2005 | English | ISBN: 0874176212 | 200 pages | PDF | 2 MB

David Strohmaier's long career as a firefighter has given him intimate knowledge of wildfire and its complex role in the natural world of the American West. It has also provided him with a rare understanding of the painful losses that are a consequence of fire. Strohmaier addresses our ambivalence about fire and the realities of loss to it - loss of life, human and animal; of livelihoods; of beloved places. He also examines the process of renewal that is yet another consequence of fire, from the infusion of essential nutrients into the soil, to the sprouting of seeds that depend on fire for germination, to the renewal of species as the land restores itself. Ultimately, according to Strohmaier, living with fire is a matter of choices, of "seeing the connection between loss on a personal scale and loss on a landscape scale: in relationship with persons, and in relationship to and with the land." We must cultivate a longer perspective, he says, accepting that loss is a part of life and that "humility and empathy and care are not only core virtues between humans but are also essential virtues in our attitudes and actions toward the earth." "Drift Smoke" is a powerful and moving meditation on wildfire by someone who has seen it in all its terror and beauty, who has lost colleagues and beloved terrain to its ferocity, and who has also seen the miracle of new life sprouting in the ashes. The debate over the role and control of fire in the West will not soon end, but Strohmaier's contribution to the debate will help all of us better appreciate both the complexity of the issues and the possibilities of hitherto unconsidered solutions that will allow us to inhabit a place where fire is a natural, and needed, part of life.
