López-Cobos is an excellent conductor with a wide repertory, best known for late-Romantic and the more colorful early 20th century literature. López-Cobos first led the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1970, and would serve as general musical director for that company from 1981 to 1990. López-Cobos was named principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic and served there from 1981 to 1986. In 1986, López-Cobos was named principal conductor and music director of the Cincinnati Symphony. With Cincinnati he would embark on an extensive recording schedule with Telarc, resulting in recordings of works by Respighi, Ravel, Richard Strauss, Wagner, Bruckner, Mahler, Falla, Bizet, Franck, and Dukas…

One of today's most sought-after conductors, Jaap van Zweden was named recipient of Musical America's Conductor of the Year Award in 2012. He has been Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra since 2008, and is also Honorary Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Radio Chamber Philharmonic (having been Chief Conductor from 2005 2011). In September 2012 he took up the post of Music Director for the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, with an initial contract of four years. This new disc from Challenge Classics showcases Bruckner's impetuous Symphony No. 6, which the composer himself considered his 'keckste,' or 'boldest.'

Of his Symphony No. 6, Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky wrote, But I absolutely consider it to be the best, and in particular, the most sincere of all my creations. I love it as I have never loved any of my other musical offspring. Tchaikovskys Symphony No. 6 was the composers final completed symphony. He led the premiere performance in October of 1893, only nine days before his death. This release also includes the world premiere recording of the Rusalka Fantasy. This orchestral suite is taken from Dvoraks opera by Manfred Honeck and Tomas Ille. Performing these works is the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, which has a long and rich history of touting the worlds finest musicians and conductors. This is the fifth release in the well-received Pittsburgh Live! Series.

Rémy Ballot and the symphonies of Anton Bruckner, performed at Bruckner's place of work, the basilica of St. Florian in Upper Austria, are an extraordinary collection of artistic abundance which becomes manifest for the fourth time in this CD release. In 2016 the annual Brucknertage festival centered around the ‘Sixth’, and once again the musical youth of the Upper Austrian Symphonic Youth Orchestra enjoyed the great honour of giving a celebrated performance in this oneof-a-kind setting. Their youthful vigour and professionalism combined with the intuition of Rémy Ballot creates a unique and exciting interpretation, and appends another worthy opus to this series which has been critically acclaimed and honoured with numerous prestigious international awards.

Prokofiev started work on his Sixth Symphony in 1945 and, unlike the victorious mood of the Fifth (Naxos 8.573029) it reveals a darker response to war and its consequences. The work was condemned by the ‘Zhdanov decree’ but composer and critics regarded the symphony highly, the noble yet anguished threnody of its central Largo balanced by the painful violence of the outer movements. The work’s ending has been described as “one of the most shattering in the repertoire”. With themes both capricious and sensuous, the Waltz Suite recycles material from earlier scores to create a remarkably effective quasi-symphonic entity.

This volume from Praga's critically-acclaimed Richter Edition series features an audiophile SACD remastering of the great Russian pianist playing Tchaikovsky. The program pairs the composer's two most popular scores in performances by two uncontested Russian masters. This recording resurrects of one of Sviatoslav Richter;s rare encounters with one of the finest conductors of the 20th century, Yevgeny Mravinsky. Richter is heard in a fiery 1958 recording of the first Piano Concerto, while Mravinsky is featured in a 1956 recording of the Pathetique symphony. This is an indispensable release for anyone interested in these two legendary artists.

"The audience knows that the performance of a Mahler symphony is not only a musical experience, but is also emotionally effective" (R. Chailly). This counts especially for Mahler's enigmatic sixth symphony, an emotionally stirring challenge for both performers and listeners, whilst also being one of the most impressive works in musical history. Chailly's interpretation with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra is "intensely great" (Die Presse). "Chailly uncompromisingly considers this sixth symphony through the lens of modernity; looking forward, not retrospectively staying in 'late romantic'. In this celebrated orchestra, all sections splendidly come together and fulfil an 'open' sound, conserving whilst respecting its original beauty." (Salzburger Nachrichten)
