A Controversial Spirit: Evangelical Awakenings in the South

A Controversial Spirit: Evangelical Awakenings in the South (Religion in America) by Philip N. Mulder
English | Apr. 18, 2002 | ISBN: 0195131630 | 245 Pages | PDF | 1 MB

A Controversial Spirit offers a new perspective on the origins and nature of southern evangelicalism. Most recent historians have focused on the differences between evangelicals and non-evangelicals. This has led to the perception that during the "Era of Awakenings" (mid-18th and early 19th century) American evangelicals constituted a united front. Philip N. Mulder dispels this illusion, by examining the internal dynamics of evangelicalism. He focuses on the relationships among the Presbyterians, Baptists, and Methodists who introduced the new religious mood to the South between 1740 and 1820. Although the denominations shared the goal of saving souls, he finds, they disagreed over the correct definition of true religion and conversion. The Presbyterians and Baptists subordinated the freedom, innovation and experience of the awakenings to their particular denominational concerns. The Methodists, on the other hand, were more aggressive and innovative advocates of the New Light awakenings. They broke through the insularity of the other two groups and revolutionized the religious culture of the emerging nation.

Some 250 years after its first publication, Gibbon's Decline and Fall is still regarded as one of the greatest histories in Western literature. He reports on more than 1,000 years of an empire which extended from the most northern and western parts of Europe to deep into Asia and Africa and covers not only events but also the cultural and religious developments that effected change during that time. Volume II (Chapters XVI-XXVI) continues his survey of Christianity from Nero to Constantine, and continues with the establishment of Constantinople, the new principal seat of the Empire, on the strategically important site where Byzantium stood, by the Bosphorus. It closes towards the end of the 4th century with the settlement of the Goths in Thrace and Asia. This second volume contains, controversially, Gibbon's sympathetic portrait of Julian, whose reign was short, but whose personality, wisdom, courage and clarity ? despite his antipathy towards the growing influence of Christianity ?bore the hallmarks of a great emperor that Rome needed.

The 9th International Conference on Lymphatic Tissues and Germinal Centres in Immune Reactions was held in Oslo, 9-14 August, 1987. These conferen ces, by the regular devotees just referred to as the germinal centre con ferences or GCC, have been held regularly at roughly three-year intervals since 1966. The credo of these conferences is "in vivo veritas", signifying that investigating components, like molecules and cells, only gives partial truth. The components must ultimately be explored in their natural con text, to see how they interact with other parts and are integrated to a whole.
The Neurological Emergence of Epilepsy: The National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic (1870-1895) (Repost)

The Neurological Emergence of Epilepsy: The National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic (1870-1895) - Vasia Lekka
English | 2014 | 220 Pages | ISBN: 3319062921 | PDF | 1.83 MB

This book explores the emergence of epilepsy as a purely neurological disorder, in the second half of the nineteenth century. It focuses on the world’s first neurological hospital, the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic in London, and on its leading figure, John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911). Through an analysis of the National Hospital’s medical records and a historical account of the course of epilepsy until our time, this book presents the nineteenth-century turn towards the scientific study of the human brain and the various political, social, ideological and epistemological implications of this major change. In spite of the recent trend of describing the history of mental illness, mental patients and psychiatric institutions, so far, neurology, epilepsy and epileptic patients have largely remained outside the scope of social historians, historians of medicine and social scientists. This book has the ambition to fill that gap.
