Starting with core pieces of the cello literature through works which are challenging even for violinists, to all-time favorites we are offered a snapshot of the musical world of the last century with its varied but still coherent style. We can see both the performing and the creative qualities of the artists, since we can hear their own arrangements in the recording.

'The arrival of an orchestra like Les Siècles on the harmonia mundi label is entirely logical: ever since it was founded by François-Xavier Roth in 2003, its musicians (mostly belonging to the new generation) have succeeded in placing several centuries of musical creation in perspective by playing the works they tackle on precisely the instruments used at the time of their premiere – without the slightest concession. The result is quite simple dazzling: never, since it was first heard, has Daphnis et Chloé displayed such a shimmering sound, revealing an infinity of details without ever losing sight of the subtle beauty of the most French of the great ‘Ballets Russes’.‘At this moment in the history of music, Ravel raised the French “Impressionist” orchestral style to a sort of apogee – in a sense it is the last great comédie-ballet in the history of French music’ (François-Xavier Roth).

Firma Melodiya presents an album of Maurice Ravel’s symphonic works dedicated to the great French composer’s 135th birthday. “Music, I insist, must in spite of everything be beautiful,” as Ravel declared his artistic credo. When the composer lived, his works were frequently a subject of relentless criticism. He was accused of imitating his contemporaries, compliance with outdated standards and banality. However, Ravel’s music has been loved by millions of listeners for more than half a century now, which lets him take a deserved place in the pantheon of the world’s classical music. Devoting attention to all genres and forms, Ravel had a special predilection to orchestra. Being one of the most important figures of musical impressionism, he was a great master of the instrumental palette. Not he was a stranger to romantically passionate impulses.

After dropping the instrument for three years to play in a rock band and study literature, he started formal piano training aged 20. Placed 4th, he was described by media as “the real winner” of the competition and received the Music Critics’ Association award as “the pianist whose incredible gift, artistic vision and creative freedom have impressed the critics as well as the audience.”
