One of the most gifted, visionary, and enduring talents ever launched into orbit by the Motown hit machine, Marvin Gaye blazed the trail for the continued evolution of popular black music. Moving from lean, powerful R&B to stylish, sophisticated soul to finally arrive at an intensely political and personal form of artistic self-expression, his work not only redefined soul music as a creative force but also expanded its impact as an agent for social change. Nicknamed The Prince of Soul, Marvin Gaye stands as one of history's greatest musical legends. From the husky whistle of Let’s Get It On to the disco kick of Got to Give it Up, Gaye’s music and style shaped the 1960s and 70s and his soulful harmonies and sensual, funk undertones continue to influence and popularise music today. In 1982, when he released Sexual Healing, People Magazine described him as “America’s hottest pop-culture turn on,” a statement that still rings true.

Parry’s two finest and most popular anthems, Blest Pair of Sirens and I was glad, make an attractive coupling to his famous choral works. The 45-minute work The Soul’s Ransom, with its sequence of solos and choruses, forms a broadly symphonic four-movement structure and The Lotos eaters; a setting for soprano, chorus and orchestra is performed by Della Jones, a characterful soloist. This is a full and atmospheric recording to match the incandescent performances.

Many familiar names heard before they developed their distinctive sound. And several unfamiliar names doing songs that well represent the early 60s style of Motown pop which frequently borrows from the prevalent doowop style of the time. The young Marvin Gaye sounds heavily influenced by James Brown while Jimmy Ruffin and Eddie Holland sound almost exactly like Jackie Wilson. Most of these songs were swept aside by the familiar Motown hits of the mid 60s. But this is a great collection because there is so much to discover here. Short on classics but full of forgotten gems.

Much of the power of the civil rights movement came with its speeches, but the movement lived just as actively through music. Whether it was blues, folk, gospel, jazz, or R&B, and whether the artist was part of the cause or simply feeling the same yearnings, the music of the civil rights movement provided focus, unity, strength, and power. Time Life's three-disc box set, Let Freedom Sing! Music of the Civil Rights Movement, not only appeared at an auspicious moment in civil rights history – early 2009, when the United States inaugurated its first black president – but it easily ranks as the most thorough look at the music that came to be identified with civil rights.
