This is a phenomenal 2 CD archive retrospective of live recordings by the Polish musician Czeslaw Niemen, performing solo using an array of keyboards and other electronic devices and singing. The material originates mainly from the "Terra Deflorata" album (as the title suggests) on CD 1, which was recorded in 1984 and other later material on CD 2, which was recorded in 1986. All the material is of course superbly performed.

Genre: Jazz, Fusion | Label: Legacy

Violinist Michal Urbaniak's first release to be made available in the U.S. (and reissued on CD in 1998) is very much in the mainstream fusion genre of the period. Urbaniak doubles on soprano and is joined by his wife Urszula Dudziak (whose electrified vocalizing gives the band much of its unique personality), keyboardist Adam Makowicz (shortly before he switched exclusively to acoustic piano), second keyboardist Wojciech Karolak, and drummer Czeslaw Bartkowski. The seven originals are all fairly colorful if eccentric, sometimes recalling Weather Report or Jean-Luc Ponty. Urbaniak's group, which did not last too long, should be of great interest to vintage fusion collectors. by Scott Yanow

This CD contains seven cycles of piano miniatures which are described as preludes. All of them are by Polish composers and date from the second half of the twentieth century. In stylistic terms, the prelude is a fairly homogenous genre and yet a more thorough analysis makes it possible to notice a rich spectrum of compositional devices and ways of shaping the musical material as well as the means of artistic expression. A disk of 33 short piano pieces, written by seven different composers over the space of 41 years might seem a daunting prospect yet this is a very enjoyable and fascinating collection of pieces, which makes for very pleasant listening.

About Polish jazz, we can say it is in a favorable situation… particularly with pianist Andrzej Jagodzinski whose inspiration and energy make him a genuine and daring artist. The Cds of the « Chopin Cycle » turned out to be the best-sellers of Polish jazz. They represent a kind of visiting card representing the essential part of his work in this last decade. His constant cooperation with Czeslaw Bartkowski on the drums, and Adam Cegielski on the bass, has reached a state of perfection in jazz… But that does not mean Jagodzinski has rested on his laurels. On the contrary, he introduces himself unexpectedly in a new light: and this time he chooses the accordion (not at all appreciated in Polish jazz) with a jazz improvisation which strays from folk music and the traditional bucolic melodic line linked with the accordion…
