Middle of the Road is a Scottish pop group who enjoyed success across Europe and Latin America in the early 1970s. Four of their singles sold over one million copies each, and received a gold disc. The tracks were "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" (which went on to sell over 10 million), "Sacramento", "Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum" and "Soley Soley". By early 1972 the group had sold over five million records.

They are a Scottish band who did not find fame until they relocated to Italy, where the majority of their hits were recorded. Although their version of Lally Stott's "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" was an international smash, it was Mac & Katie Kissoon's version of this song that made the U.S. charts. Middle of the Road's version did receive some U.S. airplay, as did Soley Soley (my personal favorite!). I was a big fan of this group in 1971 - 1972 as I used to listen to alot of shortwave broadcasts from European countries. This CD sounds great, and although I already have all but 5 tracks on vinyl, it is great to have all of these songs in one place (and the CD sounds alot better than the records do). This is a must for anybody who remembers this group and for anyone who loves the pop music of the early 70's.

Middle of the Road’s discography is complicated, the end effect of being a Scottish band whose popularity was built on European hits. Their first album was an Italian release, they had records released only on the continent then later repackaged for the U.K. as a premature Hits collection, they barely had anything in the U.S. Cherry Red/7T’s 2010 set The RCA Years performs a useful function of rounding up the released master takes - in other words, the three LPs Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep, Acceleration, and Drive On, plus six cuts only on that Italian debut - presenting the complete recorded works and far too much Middle of the Road for anyone outside of Euro-pop obsessives.

One of those uniquely '70s groups, Middle of the Road were a Scottish pop vocal group whose singles "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep," "Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum," and "Soley Soley" were huge European hits, selling in the tens of millions. Formed by Sally Carr (vocals), Ian McCredie (guitar), Eric McCredie (bass), and drummer Ken Andrew in 1970 (the group had been playing together since 1967, but under the moniker of "Part Three") Middle of the Road had trouble finding success until they uprooted from the United Kingdom and settled in Italy. There they met famed producer Giacomo Tosti, who revamped the group, and molded them in the sound and image that would take them to pop heights…

Middle of the Road is Eric Gales fourth album on Provogue/Mascot label Group after Transformation (2011), Relentless (2010) and The Psychedelic Underground (2007) and it sees him at his most expressive yet; it is a deeply personal and reflective record that echoes where he is in his life right now and he opens himself up and allows himself the chance to really flourish. Middle of the Road is the running theme throughout the record. "It's about being fully focused and centered in the middle of the road. If you’re on the wrong side and in the gravel you're not too good and if you're on the median strip that's not too good either, so being in the middle of the road is the best place to be", according to Eric…
