Guitarist Herb Ellis is joined by rhythm guitarist Freddie Green, pianist Ross Tompkins, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jake Hanna for this lightly swinging but uneventful program which has been reissued on CD. Since Green as usual does not solo, his contribution is purely as a background player. Ellis, Tompkins and Brown are the lead voices on a variety of swing tunes; best are "It Had To Be You," "A Smooth One" and "When My Dream Boat Comes Home".

Cellist Steven Isserlis once again displays his ingenuity and innovation in programming on this 2010 release combining four works for cello and orchestra that wouldn't even exist without him: all arrangements were made at his personal request, each one by the arranger of his personal choice. The most radical reworking is the opening selection, based on a suite composed for cello and orchestra by a 19-year-old Debussy, which only survived in a version for cello and piano. In her imaginative reconstruction of, or rather replacement for, Debussy's original composition, Sally Beamish uses the piece as the opening movement, going on to construct orchestral arrangements of four other Debussy works from the same period. Isserlis also includes revisions of two Ravel songs, Prokofiev's incomplete Concertino and Ernest Bloch's From Jewish Life, ending with the movement entitled Prayer. Throughout the fascinating programme, Isserlis is backed by the Tapiola Sinfonietta conducted by Gábor Takács-Nagy.

Reclusive pianist virtuoso Minoru Nojima, one of Japan’s most internationally respected musicians, recorded this classic album in 1986. When first released in 1988, Nojima Plays Liszt became a reference work and established Minoru's reputation as a fine interpreter of the music of Liszt. The album had been hard to find for many years until this reissue became available. Nojima, a "pianist's pianist," is not very well known in North America as he records and performs live very infrequently, but has been compared to some of the piano greats, was a silver prize winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1969 and has performed with orchestras around the world.

Nominated as ‘Album of the Year’ in the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards, and as ‘Best Ensemble’ in the UK Parliamentary Jazz Awards, this debut album from Arnie Somogyi's Ambulance immediately caught the jazz world’s attention. The album features five of the UK's most exciting young jazz musicians, in collaboration with U.S. jazz legend, trumpeter Eddie Henderson. The majority of ‘Accident and Insurgency’ was completed during one four-hour live session thus capturing the essence and live energy of the band. Tracks combine traditional jazz instruments and improvisation as well as modern electronic techniques and soundscapes of local noises creating a new innovative sound.
Willy Porter - Willy Porter (2002) [Reissue 2005] PS3 ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

or FLAC 2.0 Stereo (converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz | Scans included | 962 MB

Willy Porter's guitar playing is so expressive and such an integral part of his performances that he is perhaps best described as a guitarist-songwriter rather than a mere singer-songwriter. Even when he is backed by a band, as he is on most of tracks, he uses a perfectly placed bent string or subtle rhythmic shift to wordlessly comment on the song, infusing it with an extra layer of meaning. On previous CDs Porter sometimes gave into the urge to overplay, which, when you pick as well as he does, must be hard to resist.
