In 1968 American jazz giant and trumpet playing phenomenon Maynard Ferguson came to live in Britain. His stay in the UK lasted four years before returning to the US in 1972, and the four albums he recorded for the CBS label’s British division during that time are regarded by critics and fans alike as being among the best in his extensive discography. The two albums compiled here the first time they have been issued in CD format come from this period of Maynard’s career and showcase the trumpeter in two very different settings. Here are two superb albums featuring a bona fide jazz legend working in tandem with one of the UK’s finest arrangers and the cream of Britain’s jazz and session musicians.

For a period in the mid-to-late '80s, trumpeter Maynard Ferguson broke up his usual little big band and had a funky combo, a septet with just two horns and a large rhythm section. For the second of his two High Voltage CD's, Ferguson primarily plays group originals.

Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson led his greatest big band during the years that he was signed to Roulette and all of the music from his 13 Roulette LPs (plus 11 previously unissued selections) are included on this deluxe limited-edition ten-CD box set. Although three of the LPs were originally recorded as dance records (and stick close to the melodies), this box as a whole finds Maynard at his peak and with an orchestra that includes such talented soloists as trombonists Slide Hampton and Don Sebesky (both of whom contributed arrangements), altoist Lanny Morgan, the tenors of Carmen Leggio, Willie Maiden, Joe Farrell, and Don Menza, pianists Jaki Byard and Joe Zawinul, and drummer Rufus Jones in addition to the leader. The music is very jazz-oriented and contains more than its share of classic moments, particularly the sessions that resulted in A Message From Newport and Newport Suite. It's highly recommended.

Limited Edition 10 CD set of only 5,000 copies worldwide. After immersing yourself in nine hours and 141 tracks of the Ferguson orchestra of the late 1950s and early sixties, Double high Cs will be ringing in your brain for months.Ferguson gave the orchestra a signature sound and much of its drive, but this was an arrangers’ band. The high-note trumpeter had charts from established writers like Marty Paich, Bill Holman, Ernie Wilkins and Benny Golson, but he also encouraged arrangements from band members, and launched the arranging careers of Slide Hampton, Don Menza, Mike Abene and Don Sebesky.Simply Amazing!.

Fabulous Maynard in his mid-60's form. This CD is interesting as it contains two albums Maynard recorded for the Camden label in 1964.It's swinging, straight-ahead jazz, with a number of high-note trumpet features for Maynard and some tasty solos by some of his talented sidemen.Wonderful.

Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson cut back on his big band around this time, utilizing an 11-piece group with six horns and an expanded rhythm section; best known among his sidemen is tenor-saxophonist Rick Margitza. MF uses electronics on some of the selections and swings a bit on "Body and Soul." In addition to Margitza, the other soloists include guitarist Michael Higgins, altoist Tim Ries and keyboardist Todd Carlon.Ferguson's mastery of his upper register remains quite impressive.

Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's 1977 album New Vintage was yet another foray into the gluttonously epic, rock-infused jazz he had already perfected on such albums as Primal Scream and Conquistador – the latter of which contained Ferguson's popular version of "Gonna Fly Now," the theme from Rocky. ––>>>

Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson began his successful "comeback" (after several years of low-profile activity) with this well-received Columbia LP. Featuring his English orchestra (and such soloists as altoist Pete King and Danny Moss on tenor), Ferguson had a minor hit in "MacArthur Park," showcases some Indian musicians on "Chala Nata," and shows throughout that his mind was open toward both newer forms of jazz and pop music.~ Scott Yanow
