Marvin Gaye is one of the great and enduring figures of soul music, but his life was one of sexual confusion, bittersweet success and ultimately death by the hand of his own father. Through Marvin's own words and intimate memories gathered from rare film and recordings, director Jeremy Marre tells the story of a 'life of outer grace and inner torment'. Including interviews with the singer's family, friends and musical colleagues, with re-enactments and archive film of Marvin on stage, at home and in the recording studio.

Larkin Arnold, former CBS Records (Sony Music) senior executive VP, convinced Marvin Gaye to leave his flat in Belgium and sign with Columbia Records; the result would become the soul singer's last album before his untimely death. Of all his number one songs, this album's first release, "Sexual Healing," became his longest running number one single on the Billboard R&B charts (ten straight weeks).

Marvin Gaye's 1970s recordings reflected his growing awareness of social issues–"What's Going On," "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)"–coupled with a freewheeling sexuality ("Let's Get It On," "Come Get to This," "I Want You"). On both counts, Gaye was out in front of the times, and helped shape the discussion during that turbulent time. This set does a good job of briefly limning the highlights of Gaye's '70s work; coupled with the 20th Century Masters companion volume of his '60s hits, it gives a fair if less than definitive overview of one of pop's most prolific and important hitmakers. –Daniel Durchholz

Like most entries in Universal Music's Millennium Collection (previously the province of MCA Records), The Best of Marvin Gaye, Vol. 1: The '60s is a solid budget-line collection containing 11 of his biggest hits from the '60s, including "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "Pride and Joy," "Ain't That Peculiar, "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," "Can I Get a Witness," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)," "Hitch Hike," and "You're a Wonderful One." There may be a few hits missing and serious listeners will probably like a more extensive compilation, but this is nevertheless an excellent bargain for its price. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine
