Guitar virtuoso and heavy metal legend Yngwie Malmsteen is not subtle; 15 seconds into Attack!!'s opener, he fires off his first round of six-string artillery like a soldier left for dead, littering the earth with spent cartridges of neo-classical brutality. There's no denying his impressive chops – the instrumental "Baroque & Roll" is a veritable "horned-hand" seminar – but like all lecturers, Malmsteen goes on too long. He provides so much information to his weary students of rock that the unbridled joy of the subject gets lost. Ex-Rainbow vocalist Doogie White – who does a fantastic Ronnie James Dio impersonation – does wonders with Malmsteen's insipid lyrics, utilizing his throaty growl on timeless rockers like "In the Name of God" and the ubiquitous Viking anthem "Valhalla."…

No, War to End All Wars isn't a Molly Hatchet album, the Frank Frazetta cover painting notwithstanding. It's Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force's 2000 album on Spitfire, which also finally gave Malmsteen's '90s output a proper U.S. reissue release at about the same time. The fleet-fingered Swedish guitar god plays all the electric and acoustic guitar parts on War to End All Wars, of course, and he also plays bass and sitar. And, for better or worse, he writes all the lyrics. His supporting players include vocalist Mark Boals, keyboardist Mats Olausson, and drummer John Macaluso…

Even though the '90s are considered by many longtime Yngwie Malmsteen fans as not necessarily his musical or creative peak (the '80s are usually given the nod), you have to give credit to the Swedish guitar shredder for sticking to his guns throughout the '90s. When just about every veteran rocker was trying to fit in with the musical climate (whether it be donning flannel during the grunge years or donning baggy jeans during the rap-metal years), Malmsteen paid no mind – continuing merrily on his classic metal path. Since his albums were uneven during this period, the 14-track Best of Yngwie Malmsteen: 1990-1999 will come in handy to casual admirers, who aren't going to track down Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor Op. 1 anytime soon…

Like him or not, you have to credit Yngwie Malmsteen for sticking to his guns over the years. Since his debut in the early '80s, he hasn't slowed down a bit, despite countless obstacles that have been thrown in his path along the way. This double-CD live set shows that – astonishingly – Malmsteen's playing is even faster and more over the top in concert than it is on his studio recordings. Overall, Double Live is far superior to the muddy-sounding (and sloppy) Live in Leningrad disc, released ten years earlier. It includes some tasty covers by Rainbow, Deep Purple, and Jimi Hendrix. ~ Andy Hinds

After toiling with classical references in his music for most of his career, guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen finally dedicated himself to writing a concerto for electric guitar. The combination is not unique, as several rock groups, including Metallica, have been backed by full orchestras, but this is the first work of its kind to feature the electric guitar as the lead instrument in a concerto. One of Malmsteen's biggest target's for criticism has been his inability to move beyond his speed demon reputation that he acquired after bursting on the scene in the early '80s…
