Genre: Punk / Garage / Punk Rock

The Germs are a punk rock band from Los Angeles formed in the late 1970s. Their 1977 single, "Forming/Sexboy", is generally regarded as the first punk record from LA. Living fast and dying young is one of rock's great clichés, but no phrase better describes the reasons for the demise of L.A. punkers the Germs. Capable of creating a firestorm of noisy, confrontational music, they were ultimately undone by their perversely charismatic lead singer. He's named Paul Beahm, better known to the world at-large first as Bobby Pyn, later and more famously as Darby Crash, who died Sid Vicious-style out on the mainline at age 22. Taking musical cues from the Sex Pistols (and English punk in general), as well as the CBGB's scene, adding the theatricality of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Lou Reed, Crash was the perfect frontman for the Germs. Backed by guitarist Pat Smear (later of Nirvana and the Foo Fighters), bassist Lorna Doom, and drummer Don Bolles, the Germs kicked up a hellacious racket that strayed from fast/loud punk into art damage and garage grunge…

M.I.A. ended 2005 joining Gwen Stefani on her Harajuku Lovers Tour. The arrival of 2006 saw her returning to the studio to work on her upcoming album, titled Kala. The album was recorded in several countries, and producers on the album are said to include M.I.A., as well as Switch, Diplo and Timbaland. M.I.A. is also working with Three 6 Mafia on two songs for her next album. Two tracks, "XR2" and the album skit "20 Dollar" (which the fans titled "Talk About Moi") premiered on her Myspace and fan forum site, respectively. Arulpragasam visited Liberia in December 2006 to meet war-affected people there including ex-child soldiers and film a documentary on the post war situation in the country with activist Kimmie Weeks. "Bird Flu" was released via her Myspace on February 5, 2007. The video can be found on her official site, or on her Youtube account. In 2007, M.I.A. featured in the song "Come Around", a bonus track on the Timbaland album Timbaland Presents Shock Value. On 24 April 2007, the first official single to be lifted from M.I.A.'s second studio album Kala was premiered by Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1. The song, "Boyz," contains tribal beats and is supposed to have been produced by Switch, who also produced "Bird Flu." During an interview prior to the single premiering, M.I.A. confirmed that video had been filmed in Jamaica. Zane Lowe then went on to confirm that the album's title is in fact Kala and not "Power Power" or "Jimmy" as previously speculated.

The Argentinian ensemble MIA (an abbreviation of Musicos Independientes Asociados) was a project based around composer and keyboardist Lito Vitale, which had its main activity between 1974 and 1980. Friends and acquaintances came and went in the different versions of this ongoing project until it fell apart in 1980, although new material was made under that moniker for a few more years. "Archivos MIA (1974-1985) chronicles the musical history and heritage of this project on two discs, containing quite a lot of material is previously unreleased…
