Now in his thirties, Antoine Doinel has divorced his wife Christine and is having a love affair with a young shop girl, Sabine. This new relationship becomes strained when Antoine skips a dinner date to take his son Alphonse to the railway station. There, by chance, he meets his first love, Colette, who is now a successful lawyer. She has just bought a copy of Antoine’s biography, which relates all of his past loves, and she is not impressed by his poetic licence. As they talk on the train, Antoine outlines the plot for his next book, in which a man falls in love with the woman in a torn up photograph and devotes himself to finding her. As Antoine leaves the train in a hurry, he drops a piece of paper. It is the torn photograph of a young woman, lovingly put together with tape.

The second film to feature Doinel, "Antoine and Collette" (1962) was originally made for the omnibus film Love at Twenty but has outlived its companion shorts. As romantic and gently ironic as The 400 Blows is harsh and haunting, this modest 20-minute lark finds a teenage Antoine pursuing the lovely, lithe 20-year-old Colette (Marie-France Pisier) like a lovesick puppy. The comic sweetness of this episode sets the tone for all future Doinel films, and Léaud, who matured into the poster boy for the French new wave, displays the lanky charm and self-effacing egotism that propelled him through some of the greatest films of the next two decades. Based on a real-life case study, recorded in Jean-Marc Gaspard Itard's 1806 volume Memoire et Rapport sur Victor de L'Aveyron, The Wild Child is spiritually in line with François Truffaut's other films about the pains of adolescence. Truffaut himself plays Dr. Jean Itard, a doctor working at Paris' Institute for the Deaf and Dumb. Itard takes on the challenge of Victor (Jean-Pierre Cargol), a nonverbal "wild boy" found abandoned in the woods. Realizing that the Institute's rather cruel methods may drive Victor further into himself, Dr. Itard brings the boy to his own home, hoping to establish a communication base with kindness and compassion. Once he has taught Victor how to listen and respond, Itard takes it upon himself to imbue the boy with a sense of morality. Adopting an austere cinematic technique (at times reminiscent of silent films), Truffaut unfolds his story with directness and simplicity.
