Aaron Jay Kernis: Love Scenes (1992)

Tradition is…ever new because it is always reviving—born again in each generation, to be lived and applied in a new and particular way. (Thomas Merton)
A young composer with a twist: Aaron Kernis, unlike many others of his generation, has chosen to confront tradition rather than arrogantly dismiss it. His compositional building blocks are the centuries-old traditions of Western music, molded anew by a postmodern sensibility and extravagant imagination. Indeed, this is Kernis’s distinctive gift: his music embodies the aesthetic of Romanticism, but speaks in the musical language, and with the intellectual concerns of late twentieth century America.
