Altoist Bud Shank (who doubles on flute) and acoustic guitarist Laurindo Almeida first teamed up in 1954 to make a couple of albums called Brazilliance that hinted at but greatly predated bossa nova. Shank and Almeida came together 20 years later to form the L.A. Four, a quartet also including bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne.

The second recording and first studio set by the L.A. Four matched together Bud Shank on alto and flute, guitarist Laurindo Almeida, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Shelly Manne for a diverse yet consistently enjoyable program. The selections range from "Dindi" and "Manteca" to "St. Thomas" and a 13-minute exploration of "Concierto de Aranjuez." As usual, the band mixes together bossa nova and Brazilian jazz, some touches of classical music, and cool-toned bop. Recommended as a strong example of the group's appealing sound.

Montage is a good name for an L.A. Four recording, because the group (Bud Shank on flute and alto, guitarist Laurindo Almeida, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jeff Hamilton) consistently mixed together different elements to gain its own sound. Included on this date are classical themes by Claude Debussy and Heitor Villa-Lobos, three group originals (including Shank's "Madame Butterball"), "Teach Me Tonight" (taken as a samba), and cooking renditions of "My Romance" and "Squatty Roo." A fine example of the L.A. Four's unique yet very accessible music. - All Music Guide

The Heartbreakers' "L.A.M.F. (Like A Mother Fucker)" is hailed as one of the classic punk albums. Formed by New York Dolls' Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan in 1975, they influenced the UK punk scene, joining The Sex Pistols, The Damned and The Sex Pistols on the infamous Anarchy Tour. L.A.M.F. was released on Track Records in 1977 to much acclaim, but was marred by a muddy sound, caused by a mastering fault. In '94 Jungle found long-lost original, mud-free sessions and re-compiled the album. Now it reissued in a digital form and subtitled as "40th Anniversary Remaster".

The final album with Jim Morrison in the lineup is by far their most blues-oriented, and the singer's poetic ardor is undiminished, though his voice sounds increasingly worn and craggy on some numbers. Actually, some of the straight blues items sound kind of turgid, but that's more than made up for by several cuts that rate among their finest and most disturbing work…
