KOMITAS QUARTET Established in 1924 at the Moscow State Tchaykovsky Conservatory by four talented Armenian students, Komitas State Quartet celebrates its 80th Anniversary in 2004. The oldest quartet of Viennese school among existing in the world has recently applied to Guinness World Records for official recognition of that fact and the request has been approved as unique. All musicians of the quartet play Guarnerius instruments, Andrea and Pietro, of 17 and 18 centuries and their skill is so brilliant that it has always created overwhelming response in all countries of the world they toured, over 70 in total. Levon Abrahamyan was born in a family of Armenian emigrants in the city of Cairo, Egypt in 1941. He grew up in a family of musicians, where he learned about the beauty of music. He was surrounded by Sunday home concerts of classical music performed by family members and their friends. This environment influenced him to love music and start playing piano at the age of five. At the age of 15, he was hired as a principal organist, at Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin, Armenia, and continued his dedicated work at St. Karapet Church in Hollywood, United States…

KOMITAS was one of the first Armenian musicians to undergo classical Western musical training, in Berlin, in addition to music education in his own country. He published both folksong collections and writings on Armenian church melodies, and his work laid the foundations for the development of a clearly defined national musical style. The Seven Folk Dances evoke the specific timbres of Armenian instruments, the Seven Songs for Piano are fleeting and lyrical while the Twelve Children’s Pieces based on folk-themes are beautifully crisp. Msho-Shoror is one of the most ancient of all Armenian dances.
