This powerful anthology features digitally re-mastered versions of legendary live broadcasts by Kiss during the halcyon years from their first commercial breakthrough in 1974 through to the launch of their greatest hits album in 1988. KISS were formed in New York City in January 1973 by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. From the birth of the band a notable part of the act were the striking face paint and stage outfits worn by the members. The group swiftly rose to prominence on a wave of hard won publicity and their live performances grew ever more elaborate. Eventually fire breathing, blood-spitting, smoking guitars, shooting rockets, levitating drum kits, and assorted pyrotechnics were incorporated into a stage act which understandably helped the group achieve legendary status.

Unmasked is the eighth studio album by American hard rock band Kiss, released in 1980. It was the last studio album to feature the original lineup of Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss until the band reunited in 1996. Criss actually had no involvement with the recording of the album; Anton Fig (uncredited) played all the drums on the album.

Crazy Nights became a worldwide hit for Kiss and a platinum album in the United States. Gene Simmons' participation on the record was limited by his pursit of outside interests, such as acting and producing other groups. The bulk of the work on Crazy Nights fell to Paul Stanley, whose pop instincts dominated the record. Stanley brought in producer Ron Nevison, who had lately demonstrated a penchant for rejuvenating the careers of aging rock acts like Heart and Ozzy Osbourne by getting them to work with outside pop writers on crossover material. He employed that approach with Crazy Nights, and although it yielded commercial singles like "Crazy Crazy Nights" and the power ballad "Reason to Live," it also resulted in a synth-drenched record that to some sounded like Kiss was unsuccessfully chasing the styles of much younger bands.

This version of KISS 40 contains a new studio track entitled "Samurai Son (U.S. Mix)" which is a collaboration between KISS and Momoiro Clover Z. Also, some tracks that were live on the regular 2 disc version are here represented with their studio versions. Other tracks, such as "I'm A Legend Tonight" were not on the 2 disc version at all. An interesting note is how Paul-heavy this compilation is. There are only five tracks that don't feature Paul Stanley on lead vocals.

A few weeks ago I posted a Kiss tribute album from Seattle released in 1990. For this entry, it's a Kiss tribute album from Norway released in 1994. The only song that is not a Kiss cover is the tune which concludes the disc, an odd song called "Hils Paul Stanley". When you listen, you know why.

Stanley Kubrick’s account of an ambitious racetrack robbery is one of Hollywood’s tautest, twistiest noirs. Aided by a radically time-shuffling narrative, razor-sharp dialogue from pulp novelist Jim Thompson, and a phenomenal cast of character actors, including Sterling Hayden, Coleen Gray, Timothy Carey, Elisha Cook Jr., and Marie Windsor, The Killing is both a jaunty thriller and a cold-blooded punch to the gut. And with its precise tracking shots and gratifying sense of irony, it’s Kubrick to the core.
