Vocalist June Katz, the "resident den mother of the West Coast jazz scene," has been an important force in the music community as both a performer, and a nurturer for fellow artists. A fixture at the Alma Street Café from 1986 to 1993, Katz became known for her uniquely passionate and honest brand of jazz stylings, displaying what singer Kate Hammett-Vaughan has termed a "depth of innocence." In addition to holding down the venue's headlining spot, Katz turned the café into an informal training ground for musicians, inviting both veteran and up-and-coming artists to play and collaborate nightly. One of these up-and-comers was local musician Ross Taggart, who notes, "Playing at the Alma Street Café was like going to college for me, playing sax and piano with the best musicians in town." For Katz, " the young musicians who perfected their craft while playing in or with her band" became her "extended family."

The score to Little Shop was written by Fred Katz. Katz, born in 1919, was a child prodigy on both piano and cello, but would become a well-known cellist in the Los Angeles music scene of the 1950s—the first really to take the cello into the jazz arena. He became part of the very unique Chico Hamilton Quintet and was both heard and seen in the film Sweet Smell Of Success. At some point in the late 1950s, Corman found Katz or Katz found Corman and the two collaborated on several films, including A Bucket Of Blood, The Wasp Woman, Ski Troop Attack, Little Shop, and Creature From The Haunted Sea. Katz’s score perfectly accompanies a film that is occasionally worthy of Ionesco in its surreal weirdness. In fact, Katz’s music is as much fun as the film—it’s funky, jazzy, beat, hipster music, with occasional horror touches, that will keep a smile on your face or conjure up wonderful memories of Seymour Krelboin, Gravis Mushnick, Audrey Fulquard, Burson Fouch, Wilbur Force, and, of course, the great Audrey Junior.

A versatile pianist and arranger, Dick Katz has been responsible for many stimulating and memorable recordings through the years, often as an important sideman and/or producer. He studied at the Peabody Institute, the Manhattan School of Music, and Juilliard, in addition to taking piano lessons from Teddy Wilson. In the 1950s, he picked up important experience as a member of the house rhythm section of the Café Bohemia, with the groups of Ben Webster and Kenny Dorham, the Oscar Pettiford big band, and later with Carmen McRae.

Classical Smoke is the 1969 album by The Kasenetz-Katz Orchestral Cirkus. The "Cirkus" were a supergroup of sorts originally called the The Kasenetz-Katz Super Circus, sometimes known as The Kasenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus. They were a "powerhouse" formed in the 1960's by producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz, and actually were an amalgamation of a number of other groups, including The Ohio Express, The 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Music Explosion, Lt. Garcia's Magic Music Box, The Teri Nelson Group, 1989 Musical Marching Zoo, J.C.W. Ratfinks, and The St. Louis Invisible Marching Band. Were they all one and the same group? Unknown at this time but Classical Smoke was their second and last album, mixing up pop, psychedelic rock with touches of classical influences, which means they could be royalty free. Re-imagine a time when you would slap this record on your phonograph, pour lava lamp juice all over your body to conduct an "Orgy Of Lust". It is orgasmic, isn't it? There may be only 30 minutes and 15 seconds of music but this is 30 minutes and 15 seconds of Classical Smoke, do not over exert yourself. This was released on the Buddah Records subsidiary label Super K, created by Kasenetz and Katz because they were super men.

Fred Katz (born February 25, 1919) is an American composer, songwriter, conductor, cellist, pianist, and professor. In jazz, a principal contribution of Katz has been, as Leonard Feather noted, “to put the cello to full use both in arco and pizzicato solos.” Oscar Pettiford had already indicated the considerable jazz potential of plucked (pizzicato) cello, but with Oscar, the instrument remained secondary to his primary instrument, the bass. Katz was the first musician to utilize all of the cello in jazz as his chief instrument in that idiom.
