"For a time, Julie London was as famous for her sexy album covers as for her singing. Her debut is her best, a set of fairly basic interpretations of standards in which she is accompanied tastefully by guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Ray Leatherwood. "Cry Me a River" from this album, was her biggest hit, and her breathy versions of such numbers as "I Should Care," "Say It Isn't So," "Easy Street," and "Gone with the Wind" are quite haunting." ~allmusicguide

There's something about Julie London's voice… sultry, sexy, super-cool… that perfectly captures the feel of the night. And, if you only know of her through "Cry Me a River" - as most people do - then you're in for a real treat because between the mid 50's and the late 60's she produced a huge amount of similarly beautiful music.
Featuring 50 tracks, most of which are "standards", virtually all of which are near-perfect examples of how to inject pure "atmosphere" into a song, and an incredibly large number of which are better than their more famous originals, this superb compilation will leave you wondering why she wasn't ranked up there with the great artists of her time… and, more interestingly, given the huge popularity of recent "jazz-cool" artists such as Norah Jones, why she's still so undiscovered.

This 3-disc set is exceptional value for Julie London fans, comprising tracks from the early years of her recording career, through the Liberty singles as well as her Capitol recordings. Julie London's sultry, come-hither vocal delivery is evident throughout such numbers as "'Round Midnight", "When I Fall in Love", "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning", "Hot Toddy" and "I Got it Bad". There are also fun numbers like "Give a Little Whistle" and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy". Julie London was her own worst enemy when it came to her musical career; she never felt that her voice was special, nor did she think her overall musicality as good as other jazz singers of the period. While she did have some healthy competition from such singers as June Christy, Rosemary Clooney and Peggy Lee, Ms London managed to hold her own, garnered a legion of devoted fans, and recorded many chart albums. A fantastic gift for the Julie London fan in your house!

Actress and singer Julie London is best remembered in pop terms for her much-covered classic ‘Cry Me A River’ a Number 9 US hit in 1955 and a Number 22 UK success two years later. But as this compilation shows, there was much more to the girl than one impressive song.

"It doesn't get much better than this, either for the recording career of Julie London or the whole concept of a vocalist doing standards with a good jazz combo providing backup. Listeners who like these sorts of songs but don't enjoy the over-arranged sounds of studio big bands and orchestras will no doubt take an immediate liking to having players such as Joe Pass and the terrific drummer Colin Bailey swinging away instead…"

"Exotic and Latin albums were big deals in the 1950s and early '60s, and singers as diverse as Dean Martin, Lena Horne, and Peggy Lee were recording with castanets and bongo drums. Peggy Lee was so successful at the style that she cut two albums of light pseudo-Latin jazz in 1960. Like Peggy Lee, Julie London combined a restrained vocal approach with jazz phrasing and a cool attitude with icy sex appeal…"
