Pablo serves up another scoop of material from the delicious John Pisano guitar duet sessions of summer/fall 1994 with no dropoff at all in tasty musical value. Lee Ritenour, Phil Upchurch, Ted Greene and Dori Caymmi return from the Among Friends CD, and additional cooking sessions with Joe Diorio and acoustic-only duets with Gene Bertoncini turn up. Along with a quota of standards and overlooked gems like Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Captain Bacardi," there are more delectable Pisano compositions to be heard, five in all. One of the best is the jazz waltz with Diorio, "Blues for Joe," presumably written in memory of longtime partner Joe Pass, who died two months before the session; the opening sounds more like a celebration of Wes Montgomery…

In 1976, guitarists Ralph Towner and John Abercrombie teamed up for a duet session, Sargasso Sea, that was released under Abercrombie's name. Five years later, they made this ECM date. One can easily tell the two guitarists apart, since Abercrombie mostly plays electric and has a more forceful sound, while Towner's solos are usually more introverted. They perform three of Towner's songs, a pair of Abercrombie originals, and three collaborations. Although the interaction tends to be fairly quiet, there is a lot of subtle passion.

Label: Transatlantic Records/TRA 336 | Release: 1976 | Genre: Celtic-Folk

Excellent addition to any celtic-folk music collection.
John Renbourn's first post-Pentangle (or nearly post-Pentangle) solo album, joined briefly by fellow guitarist Dominique Trepeau and featuring further contributions by John James, is one of his most beautiful recordings, and also among his most spare guitar instrumentals.
