Jazz / Guitar Jazz

Freddie Green seldom led sessions and seldom played lead. Instead, he formed part of the classic rhythm section that gave the Count Basie band its steady pulse. This rare date finds Green with tenor Al Cohn, trumpeter Joe Newman, trombonist Henry Coker, pianist Nat Pierce, bassist Milt Hinton, and either Jo Jones or Osie Johnson on drums. Mr. Rhythm, in fact, will remind many of a good Basie set. The steady drums, bass, and guitar on "Back and Forth" and "Something's Gotta Give" push the music forward, swinging ever so lightly. Nat Pierce's minimalist piano work also owes something to Basie.

Chet Baker - Compact Jazz Series (1955 - 1964)
Label: Emarcy | Covers | MP3 cbr 320 kbps | Time: 1h 7m 10s | Size: 154 MB
Style: Jazz, Cool, West Coat Jazz

Chet Baker's entry in the Compact Jazz series is essentially an odyssey between two continents, chronicling his wanderings through Europe and America over the span of a decade. The disc begins with some of his 1955 Paris sessions, and then skips over to Baden-Baden for an eerie duo encounter with pop singer/guitarist Caterina Valente that is rhythmically close to a premonition of bossa nova. On to Chicago in 1958, where Chet communes and races with Stan Getz for 15 often thrilling minutes on "Halfbreed Apache." Two New York tracks from 1965 catch Chet nonchalantly blowing at ballad tempo with a section of reeds and rhythm section. Finally the disc backtracks a year with four tracks from a New York sextet and quartet (whose personnel includes the young Bob James or Hal Galper on piano) where Chet is in prime bop form; no limp tones here. Although these are not his most famous sessions, you'll get a better impression of Chet's work here than with some other single-disc samplers that come to mind. ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide

Enjoyable budget sampler from Warner/Jazz Les Incontournables series highlighting guitarist Kenny Burrell's recordings for the Prestige, Original Jazz, and Fantasy labels. These 12 tracks stem from four decades of material, with appearances by Bill Evans, Jack Mcduff, Coleman Hawkins, and John Coltrane. Essential sessions for those unfamiliar with Burrell's work, however, there is nothing new here for collectors. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
