PentaTone's live recording of John Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles is billed as the world premiere recording, though it was preceded by the 1991 video recording of the Metropolitan Opera's production, which was conducted by James Levine and starred Teresa Stratas. Even so, this 2016 audiophile presentation of the LA Opera production, conducted by James Conlon, is a major event for opera lovers, especially since the Met's recording is difficult to find and performances of The Ghosts of Versailles are rare.

This seasonal offering from The Choir of Westminster Abbey presents a delightful and unusual selection of music for Christmas. It encompasses many of the diverse themes of Christmas which have inspired composers across the ages: light shining in darkness; the tenderness of mother and child; the fulfilment of promise; and the warm merriment of corporate celebration. An excellent selection of contemporary carols features the composers Jonathan Dove and Bob Chilcott among others. The richness of twentieth-century church music is illustrated in works by Poulenc, Walton, Mathias and Leighton, and by the heartbreakingly lovely piece The little road to Bethlehem by Michael Head. Skilful arrangements of the traditional carols Silent night, In dulci jubilo and I saw three ships, complete this attractive seasonal release.

This is no doubt a remarkable album, and if not, then at least a wondrous or perhaps curious one. It showcases the rapidly developing skills of guitarist and composer James Emery, whose career has traversed a not altogether straight line from the pure avant-garde of his early years to this highly detailed third stream symphonic work that incorporates a light (though not unserious) touch that defies categorization.

May I present to you my 102nd (technically 103rd) album, "THROWBACK," released (officially) on the second anniversary of the previous album's release. I suppose a two year gap is a typical and respectable gap between releases, and certainly an improvement over the previous 8-year gap. But hey, as it is a month before my 46th birthday, why beat myself up about it or bore you with the trivia? Onto the music!

Fans of the new wave of trad-folk are no doubt familiar with the music of James Elkington, even if they've never heard his name. The London transplant cut his teeth in the Chicago Thrill Jockey scene, moving his band The Zincs to the city before collaborating on projects with Tortoise's Doug McCombs, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Steve Gunn. Drawing from British folk, avant-rock, and jazz traditions alike, Wintres Woma (Old English for "the sound of winter") is James Elkington's debut solo record. His assured album, recorded at Wilco's Loft, is baroquely detailed and beautifully constructed, featuring both his baritone vocals and some of Chicago's finest, including Tomeka Reid.
