Candid’s 2010 release Devil May Care! cannibalizes seven tracks from Jamie Cullum’s 2002 sophomore set, Pointless Nostalgic, and since this album is only ten cuts, that’s a fair portion of the record. The other three tracks are unreleased material from the Pointless Nostalgic sessions: a spare strings-and-voice arrangement by Geoff Gascoyne of Brian Wilson’s “God Only Knows,” a nice version of “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” that fits right in with the rest of the sessions, and “Small Day Tomorrow,” which features the legendary Bob Dorough on lead vocals. “God Only Knows” is the biggest departure from the voice/piano/bass/drums instrumentation of the album but it fits well into the warm, intimate vibe of the sessions, which offer a friendly, well-manicured spin on Harry Connick, Jr.’s Sinatra throwback. While it’s unclear why there’s a whole new title instead of an expanded reissue of Pointless Nostalgic, this is nevertheless an enjoyable snapshot of Cullum at his jazziest.

INTERLUDE marks a rare focus upon largely straight-ahead jazz and a return to interpretation from an artist who has made a habit of bending genres, writing original material and bringing new sounds and new listeners to the music. Produced, Engineered & Mixed by Benedic Lamdin for Nostalgia 77 and featuring guest spots from Laura Mvula and Gregory Porter, the album repertoire choices were inspired by the music and musicians he's featured on his award-winning UK jazz radio show over the last few years and his own crate digging tendencies, INTERLUDE avoid cliché with a fistful of less obvious jewels from the American songbook along with a couple modern surprises.

So, the front man for the rock/pop group called The Stooges gets an invite to pitch in with a classic jazz piano trio. The Stooge would be Iggy Pop; the piano trio, Jamie Saft's, with bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bobby Previte. That's quite an experiment, like something Frank Zappa might have tried.

Jazz / Modern Creative

Jamie Saft and his dynamic trio presents a sparkling interpretation of the work of Bob Dylan. A lifelong Dylan enthusiast, Saft is the perfect man to take on this challenging project and his choice of compositions, spanning over four decades of activity, is as creative as the arrangements themselves. Featuring several guest vocalists including Mike Patton and Antony, this is a deep and meaningful tribute to one of the world’s greatest living songwriters, a Jew whose influence resounds in the work of several generations of pop musicians.
