Using almost no dialogue, the film follows a number of residents (both human and animal) of a small rural community in Hungary - an old man with hiccups, a shepherdess and her sheep, an old woman who may or may not be up to no good, some folk-singers at a wedding, etc. While most of the film is a series of vignettes, there is a sinister and often barely perceptible subplot involving murder.

György Pálfi-Hukkle (2002)

Hungarian director György Pálfi's debut is a mesmerizing symphony of sight and sound that chronicles a series of mysterious interconnected events both idylic and sinister. From an elderly man's hiccup (or hukkle) to a microscopically observed menagerie of animals, HUKKLE lovingly magnifies the little moments of a summer day that usually pass unnoticed. With minimal dialogue, HUKKLE brims with subtle secrets waiting to be unlocked and etches a quirky portrait of a rustic village where things are not what they seem. (-DVD cover)

Three stories. Three ages. Three men. Grandfather, father, son. One is an orderly, one is a leading sportsman, and one is a master taxidermist. One desires love, the other success, and the third immortality. Like the novels from Gabriel Garcia Marquez, or the works of the popular contemporary Hungarian writer, Parti Nagy Lajos, surrealism and historical facts are mixed to create a kind of "fairy realism". As the 20th century draws to a close, we witness history as seen through the eyes of three generations of a Hungarian family…

Three Stories. Three ages. Three men. Grandfather, father, son. One is an orderly, one is a leading sportsman, and one is a master taxidermist. One desires love, the other success, and the third immortality. Historical facts and surrealism become intertwined, not unlike the magical realist work of Gabriel García Marquez or the Hungarian writer Lajos Parti Nagy. Set in the last days of the doomed quest for the Holy Grail, this is a tale of the end of the age of chivalry and the death of a dream. Riding through dark, treacherous forests, King Arthur's knights return to Camelot, their ranks decimated, their morale gone. Lancelot in particular feels responsible for their failure, sure that his adulterous love for Queen Guinevere has ruined their mission. Discouragement hangs over everything, staining the bright pageantry of the court with the twilight tones of a dying age. Shot with the astonishing, austere beauty that marks all of his work, this powerful chronicle of the end of the Round Table ranks with Bresson's finest achievements.
