The Planets became one of the most popular and widely recognised musical works of the 20th century. Holst himself conducted the LSO in two early recordings of his masterpiece. Sir Colin Davis's blazing performance, recorded over three evenings in June 2002, promises to be one of the classical releases of the year.

Is it chance or serendipity that Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic timed their new recording of Holst's The Planets to coincide with the current astronomical upheaval? Though Holst learned of the discovery of Pluto four years before he died, it probably did not occur to him to add another movement, especially since the work's last section, 'Neptune, the Mystic,' ends in an other-worldly, ethereal fade-out, enhanced by an off-stage wordless women's chorus.

Gustav Holst's "The Planets" is a brilliant portrayal of the other celestial bodies outside of Earth (except for Pluto because it wasn't discovered back when Holst composed this). Mars is violent and in a military march form. Parts of it have the brassy dominating sound resembling that of Darth Vader's theme. Venus sounds like something out of a black-and-white romantic movie, high lush strings, celesta, french horn and all, a personal favorite. Mercury is a very playful sounding piece, strong emphasis on the woodwinds and strings. Jupiter is definately my favorite…

Sir Adrian Boult recorded this work no less than 5 times, this is the second, coming between the 1945 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the 1956 with the Vienna state Opera Orchestra. Overall it seems to work wonderfully well. The balance feels just right: where quite a few recordings give the impression that there are 7 stand-alone mini tone poems, here, there seems a very organic connection from first movement to last.
