The underrated but talented hard bop altoist Vincent Herring is in excellent form on the quintet date Evidence. While Herring's tone is as usual a bit reminiscent of Cannonball Adderley, he comes up with many fresh ideas and swinging phrases on the eight songs, which include two of his originals and one song from pianist Mulgrew Miller. Miller and trumpeter Wallace Roney also take consistently rewarding solos, with bassist Ira Coleman and drummer Carl Allen offering stimulating support. Highlights include Herring's warmth on "Stars Fell on Alabama" and the driving versions of "Voyage" and Cedar Walton's "Hindsight." Easily recommended to fans of Herring's straight-ahead playing.

Altoist Vincent Herring's release is an impressive effort. Although he still sounds fairly close to Cannonball Adderley at times, Herring is continuing to develop as a fine modern bop stylist. Accompanied by a strong rhythm section (pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Ira Coleman, and drummer Billy Drummond), Rosnes explores Kenny Barronis' "And Then Again" and eight standards, including Jobim's lesser-known "If You Never," John Lewis' "Skating in Central Park," and Billy Strayhorn's lyrical "Chelsea Bridge."

Vincent Herring, one of the great jazz saxophonists of our time, matches his soulful, expressive playing with one of the baddest trumpet players around, Jeremy Pelt, in a quintet that also features the hard-driving rhythm section of Mike LeDonne, Brandi Disterheft and Joe Farnsworth. It s a group of musicians that Herring knows well and there is an obvious rapport and chemistry from the very first note of the funky bebop opener, 'Grind Hog s Day'. Herring was Cedar Walton s saxophonist for more than 20 years and he remembers him with Walton s Latin-tinged 'Theme for Jobim' and Mike LeDonne s poignant dedication, 'Walton'. Vincent remarks, 'All of us are Cedar s musical children.

For this 2005 studio session, Vincent Herring switches to a rhythm section (pianist Danny Grissett, bassist Essiet Essiet, and drummer Joris Dudli) that he had previously worked with exclusively in Europe. Renato Chicco, Herring's former pianist, contributed the upbeat opener, "Ends and Means," showcasing the leader and Grissett. Dudli contributed the funky "Tom Tom" (featuring Essiet) and the driving "Thoughts," the latter showcasing the leader's powerful soprano sax, with trumpeter Jeremy Pelt (who appears on half of the tracks) adding an excellent muted solo. The funky adaptation of Benny Golson's "Stable Mates" takes it in a new direction, while Duke Ellington's "Caravan" is easily transformed into a powerful hard bop vehicle. Jazz musicians have been covering tunes from the vast Beatles songbook for decades, but Herring's breezy adaptation of "Norwegian Wood" almost suggests a Scottish flavor, with the spotlight upon Grissett's inventive solo.

Following on the heels of their vinyl sampler and an introductory set by pianist Harold Mabern, comes The Uptown Shuffle by alto saxophonist Vincent Herring. This nine-track recital offers a smattering of Herring originals along with some well-chosen standards. Herring's choice of bandmates is nothing short of top shelf, with pianist Cyrus Chestnut and drummer Joe Farnsworth locking in with up and comer Brandi Disterheft on bass…

“Ronnie Scott’s…” mused the boundary-shattering guitarist John McLaughlin, “…where would I be without them?” The venerable London jazz club and its charismatic namesake gave so much to McLaughlin’s career, the roots of which extend as far back as McLaughlin’s stint as a member of the club’s house band in the 1960s. Since then, his pioneering spirit, instrumental virtuosity, and improvisational fearlessness have taken him around the world, put him on stage alongside fellow giants such as Miles Davis and Tony Williams, and has given listeners a series of compelling, revolutionary recordings that have redefined improvised music for generations to come.
