The third album recorded in Japan by Helen Merrill with the Sadao Watanabe Quintet featuring Masabumi Kikuchi, Isao Suzuki & Masahiko Togashi, arranger Norio Maeda plus strings ensemble. The band replays the Bossa Nova's greatest hits among others, original compositions from the master Antonio Carlos Jobim as So Danço Samba, How Insensitive or Agua Di Beber, just as some Japanese Pop (Yume Wa Yoru Hiraku, Shinjite Itai) & Jazz standards (Fly Me To The Moon, The Shadow Of Your Smile). All tracks arranged by Norio Maeda (tracks: 1, 3, 6, 8, 11, 12) & Sadao Watanabe (tracks: 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10), recorded at Victor Studios, Tokyo.

One thing that set Helen Merrill apart from other '50s jazz singers was her acutely dramatic vocal style. Her earnest phrasing, elongated notes, and incandescent tone might even strike the contemporary listener as qualities more appropriate for the Broadway stage than a jazz club. On 1955's Dream of You, though, Merrill found reconciliation, sounding both melodramatic and swinging within Gil Evans' darkly spacious, yet economical arrangements. Suitably, torchy ballads are prominent. On the somewhat grandiose side there's "Where Flamingos Fly" and "I'm a Fool to Want You," which find Merrill in a pensive mood amidst a variety of tempo and timbre shifts.

Helen Merrill's first American record since 1968 (she had spent much time in Japan) is mostly a duet set with pianist John Lewis; three songs also have flutist Hubert Laws, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Connie Kay. The emphasis is on ballads, with all of the nine songs (other than the pianist's "The Singer") being quite well-known. The obvious empathy between Merrill and Lewis is well displayed on such numbers as "Django" (which has rarely been sung), "Angel Eyes," "Alone Together" and "Mad About the Boy." An introspective set full of subtle creativity.

A fine singer with a warm, expressive voice, Helen Merrill's infrequent recordings tend to be quite special with plenty of surprises and chance-taking. She started singing in public in 1944 and was with the Reggie Childs Orchestra during 1946-1947. Merrill, who was married for a period to clarinetist Aaron Sachs, had opportunities to sit in with some of the top modernists of the time, including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Bud Powell.

40 years after recording a classic album with trumpeter Clifford Brown, singer Helen Merrill now pays tribute to him. Merrill performs a variety of tunes, most of which were associated with Brownie. Producer Torrie Zito contributed a new original, "Brownie." Helen Merrill is heard in top form, giving plenty of feeling to the lyrics while leaving room for the guest trumpeters.
