Recorded live during Hawkwind's 1985 The Chronicle of the Black Sword tour, Live Chronicles is a remarkable retelling of that album's own storyline, spread out over four full sides of vinyl and littered with Hawkwind oldies that really could have been written with Chronicle in mind – and new material that, apparently, was. Following in the footsteps of 1972's Space Ritual with its combination of music and narration (from original Chronicle author Michael Moorcock), the show more or less follows the studio set's running order, opening with the mood-melding "Song of the Swords" and then pursuing hero Elric through a complex tale that is only strengthened by the sheer cohesion of its re-creation – Moorcock himself later described the live show as "the pure version," although it must be confessed that vinyl alone loses a great deal of the magic.

Hawkwind are an English rock band and one of the earliest space rock groups. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. Formed in November 1969, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and they have incorporated different styles into their music, including hard rock, heavy metal, progressive rock and psychedelic rock. They are also regarded as an influential proto-punk band. Dozens of musicians, dancers and writers have worked with the band since their inception. Notable musicians to have performed in the band include Lemmy, Ginger Baker and Huw Lloyd-Langton, but the band are most closely associated with their founder, the singer, songwriter and guitarist Dave Brock, who remains the only original member.

Recorded, of course, during Hawkwind's 1979 U.K. tour, Live '79 wrapped up seven tracks from the hour-plus extravaganza that greeted concert-goers, with the emphasis (hardly surprisingly) on the older classics that remained the band's most dramatic calling card. For longtime fans, however, there were still several surprises, as the solid mass of earlier band lineups opened out to almost virtuosic proportions. With one eye surely fixed on the rapidly emerging New Wave of British Heavy Metal, guitarist Huw Lloyd Langton lays down guitar solos that the likes of "Silver Machine" and "Master of the Universe" had never previously imagined.

Just re-released in October 2003, for the first time on DVD, comes this capture of a live performance on the 1995 'Alien 4' tour. It was really the last time (as in most recent) that Hawkwind mounted one of their nationwide-tours-with-a-big-stage-show…

Hawkwind's 1985 stage production based on Michael Moorcock's Elric books is showing its age a little. Featuring dated, naff video "effects" and editing that's amateur at best I can only surmise that this was one of those shows that you had to be at to fully enjoy the experience. The band's performance is fantastic, coming from the same source as the Live Chronicles album.

The Hawkwind anthology phenomenom has baffled me for decades. What also baffles me even more is why I own so many of them that contain tracks that I already have on regular albums! I never quite understood the marketing strategy or demographic targets but statistically they sell regardless of quality, concept or whether or not the band sees any royalties from them. The band certainly is recieving royalties from this latest offering from Atomhenge who has apparently bought up the rights to most of Hawkwind's back catologue.
