Illinois Jacquet was "foremost of the WWII-era "Texas tenor titans", an influential figure in both jazz and R&B saxophone. "Swing's The Thing" is one of his first recordings. Recorded in Los Angeles in 1956, it features Illinois Jacquet on tenor sax, Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Jimmy Jones on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Jo Jones on drums. These magical performances capture the genius that was Jacquet's playing, backed by a stellar ensemble.

Certainly the most uncommon duo of Brazilian artists to have a solid international career, Los Índios Tabajaras was formed by the brothers Antenor Moreyra Lima (Muçaperê) and Natalício Moreyra Lima (Erundi). In the U.S. they had success in the early '70s with "Sakura-Sakura," and their biggest hit was the fox trot "Maria Helena," which won second place at the American charts and sold over one-and-a-half million copies. Their 48 LPs also sold millions of copies worldwide, and they toured South, Central, and North America, Asia, and Europe before settling in the U.S.

Ken Peplowski, on the other hand, is without a doubt one of the best clarinet and tenor sax players in the swing tradition.

For their fifth album on Venus Records, Bill Charlap and his New York Trio took on another songbook. This time it was Cole Porter's. Begin the Beguine is part of Charlap's songbook series. Previous entries include that of Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington. When you mix the divine melodies and romantic nature of Cole Porter with this great piano trio that has played together for five years…well, the results are extraordinary. The album begins with the lively "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", then goes through the lovely "So In Love", the surprisingly unhurried "Begin the Beguine", and ends with the heart-rending "Every Time We Say Goodbye".
