Rated 4.5 out of 5 star by AllMusic Guide
Reached #1 on Billboard Jazz Albums 1975

This is one of Grover Washington, Jr.'s best-loved recordings and considered a classic of r&bish jazz. All four songs (which includes Billy Strayhorn's "Passion Flower") are quite enjoyable but it is "Mister Magic" that really caught on as a major hit. Bob James provided the colorful if somewhat commercial arrangements, there are spots for guitarist Eric Gale, and Washington (mostly on tenor and soprano) is heard in particularly creative form. Highly recommended.

Spanning three decades, this collection gathers material from his career with Motown, Elektra, and Columbia Records. It paints a broad yet clear picture of a gifted musician. His most successful recording of course was his collaboration with Bill Withers, "Just The Two Of Us" which is here in its long version. Other guest appearances include Grady Tate, Patti Labelle, Bill Cosby (no, he doesn't sing), Phyllis Hyman and Lalah Hathaway. In addition to his own compositions, he does his own interpretation of "Mercy Mercy Me"(Marvin Gaye), "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life"(Stevie Wonder) and "Jamming"(Bob Marley). The last two tracks were released posthumously. The liner notes give a good backstory of his rise to stardom.

Anthology is a copulation of the greatest hits from perhaps the greatest Sax player ever. Every song on this Album is a masterpiece, and well worth the money spent. There are so many timeless classics on This two CD set, like "Georgia On My Mind" and "Ain't No Sunshine." My only complaint would be the fact "Winelight" was not included, but I own the CD so not too much of a loss. If you love Jazz, especially if you love the sax, I highly recommend this album.

This is very evident in this performance from the Trump Regency Cabaret Theater in Atlantic City, New Jersey. You will feel the magic of this legendary performer captured at his artistic peak.

Winelight is a smooth, well produced groove, that flows together nicely. It is an album good for waking up to on a Sunday morning, or playing while enjoying a bottle of wine late Saturday night. The songs feature enough tempo changes to keep things interesting, and Grover extends several of his solos, often playing beyond the context of the song. Ralph MacDonald’s percussion is particularly effective throughout the album.

Eddie Henderson's lovely flugelhorn colors the opening track, "E Preciso Perdoar (One Must Forgive)," setting the mood for a very mellow set. Washington, accompanied by six pieces, plays the standards straighter than Johnny Mathis sings them; everything is ratcheted down '40s-ish/'50s-ish cozy nightclub style.

Grover Washington, Jr.'s first album in three years (and debut for Columbia) did not yield any major hits but found him playing in prime form. Switching between his distinctive soprano, alto and tenor, Washington is joined by bassist-producer Marcus Miller, a large rhythm section and guest vocalists B.B. King ("Caught A Touch Of Your Love") and Jean Carne (on two songs). Highlights include "Strawberry Moon," "The Look Of Love," "Maddie's Blues" and "Summer Nights."
