Paul O'Grady travels to Germany and into the world of his fairy tale heroes - the Brothers Grimm. Paul discovers that as with all forms of magic, there is more to fairy tales than first meets the eye. He explores the landscapes, picture book castles and chocolate box villages that inspired his favourite stories, from the land of the seven dwarfs, to the castle where a Rapunzel is said to have been held and the forest community where the real life Little Riding Hood lived and the unmarried women still wear red bonnets.

Strictly speaking, this isn't a Grady Martin CD so much as it's a compilation of recordings on which his guitar work as a session player figures prominently, although he's credited as the leader of the featured or backup group on a few of the cuts. Still, on most of these 32 tracks from 1949 to 1956 he was a hired hand, lending his licks to a wealth of hillbilly and rockabilly performers, including stars like Brenda Lee, Little Jimmy Dickens, Red Foley, Burl Ives, Johnny Horton, Wayne Raney, and a pre-fame Buddy Holly. There's even a bit of blues via his help on sides by Cecil Gant, as well as appearances on singles of various styles by a whole bunch of singers known only to collectors. Should you be interested in this material mostly for Martin's contributions, his guitar riffs are certainly excellent whether he's playing country boogie or moving into rock & roll, sometimes reeling off some scorching solos, at others offering more subordinate, sturdy work in service of the particular song.

Gidon Kremer has again recorded the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin of Bach and while his facility and technical grace are intact, in this recording he appears to have been deeply influenced by his time with the moderns (Adams, Pärt, Schnittke, Piazzola, Glass, et al). For this listener it seems that studying and performing these contemporary composers' manipulation of sound and instrumental scope has enriched Kremer's thought about the perfection of Bach. Not everyone will agree with Kremer's approach to these works on this new recording, but for those who know Bach's solo violin pieces there are pleasures in store. Remaining technically suave and with a luxuriant tone, Kremer seems to be communicating with the psychological Bach, offering different tempi and more soulful approaches than those of his colleagues. The results are mesmerizing. Highly recommended.

Grady Kelneck was almost born on the stage, his singer/drummer mother rushed right from a gig to the hospital in labour. Brought up in a show biz family, Grady spent his childhood and adolescence playing in a band with mother, father, and brother. One of his earliest musical memories is singing in front of 20,000 people for Toronto’s 150th birthday at City Hall. His grandfather is a musical legend in the Ontario north, Stompin Tom Connors even penning a song after him. His latest effort, Take My Hand, produced by Toronto music mainstay Aaron Comeau, is a collection of self-penned raw ballads - wide open spaces and smooth sailing vocals accompanied by intricate acoustic guitar picking and backed by a band.
