This was one of the legendary tenor saxophonist’s final recording sessions before his death on November 5, 1996. Recorded in 1994 with a marvelous quartet, Freedom Jazz Dance is a portrait of a musical titan with his creative muse in full bloom. Eddie Harris and his tenor sax join together with Jacky Terrasson, piano; George Mraz, bass, and Billy Hart, drums, to compile an eight-track SACD full of jazz's favorite staples as well as originals by quartet members. His immediately recognizable sound is beautifully showcased on this disc.

One of the most accessible of all jazz pianists, Gene Harris' soulful style (influenced by Oscar Peterson and containing the blues-iness of a Junior Mance) was immediately likable and predictably excellent. After playing in an Army band (1951-1954), he formed a trio with bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Bill Dowdy which was, by 1956, known as the Three Sounds. The group was quite popular, and recorded regularly during 1956-1970 for Blue Note and Verve. Although the personnel changed and the music became more R&B-oriented in the early '70s, Harris retained the Three Sounds name for his later Blue Note sets. He retired to Boise, ID, in 1977, and was largely forgotten when Ray Brown persuaded him to return to the spotlight in the early '80s. Harris worked for a time with the Ray Brown Trio and led his own quartets in the years to follow, recording regularly for Concord and heading the Phillip Morris Superband on a few tours; 1998's Tribute to Count Basie even earned a Grammy nomination.

Eddie Harris and Les McCann's Second Movement is the second and last duet recording by Harris and McCann, and the follow-up to their 1969 "live" recording Swiss Movement. It is among the series from Label M which launched its reissue series from the Atlantic Records' archives in November 2000. The tenor saxophonist and the vocalist and pianist display their brand of showmanship and musicality that rivaled such great pairings as Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Shirley Scott and Stanley Turrentine, or Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons. This CD is a soul/jazz funk workout and features great technology that emphasizes one of their best songs, "Shorty Rides Again.

He may not have recorded for Philadelphia International, but Major Harris still made some classic Philly soul in the mid-1970s. He had been a member of the Delfonics before going solo, and in 1975 he had his big moment in the spotlight when he scored a hit with 'Love Won't Let Me Wait.' While that song is undoubtedly the centerpiece of MY WAY, it's surrounded by plenty of other slices of lush R&B rendered in the classic Philly style.
