Classical - Baroque

Only in last times the significance of Telemann in musical history was really recognized: his part is more than a participation in the only artistic field of the 18th century: Telemann, the unflinching avantgarde musician, he came from the same generation and landscape as Bach and Handel, tried in his own manner to participate in the determination of the decisive transitions within the stilistic phases which were always changing. He realises the connection between Bach's and Mozart's time; in his stilistical position he was variable and so "progressive" that even the "young" musical generation respected him as advisor and master. It is significant that even in pieces where he utilizes baroque forms, he combines them - like Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg (1718-1795) remarks on Telemanris Art of Fugues - with the so-called "gallant" style.

These are outstanding examples of Telemann's German style of composition, seen mostly in his chamber cantatas, which are on a par with Bach's. The orchestra of the Michaelstein Monastery Institute for Performance Practice has always specialized in the works of Telemann, and their familiarity with that repertoire serves them well; they play the stuff with confidence and grace. The four vocalists likewise are Bach-era specialists, and prove it with vigor. My only small criticism, and it's aesthetic rather than technical, is that I don't especially enjoy the sound of alto Henning Voss's voice per se. On the slower chorale-like movements, he sounds hollow to me. On the more exhuberant embellished passages, however, his superb athleticism justifies his role in the performance.

Telemann was fully aware not only of the need to give each instrument its due but also of what each could achieve, tailoring his music to suit them all, including the recorder, which he used in his orchestral works in a whole series of cyclical forms from overture to solo and double concerto.
