In 2001 Dan Michaelson was living in Reykjavik, Iceland. Pondering the practical applications of his Fine Art degree and fussing over a handful of demos he had made in England 6 months previously, he returned to London, moved into an abandoned Jewish tearoom and theatre (which also housed the Lithuanian Social Club in the basement) and committed himself writing songs for the foreseeable future. The first fruits of this were heard on 2005’s DonkeyStock, one of three records under the name Absentee.

A star-studded international – the band can claim Germany, United States, Greece, Austria, and Czech Republic as homelands – power metal troupe with ties to genre greats Helloween and Blind Guardian, among others, Serious Black was founded in 2014 around the talents of Roland Grapow (Helloween, Masterplan), Thomen Stauch (Blind Guardian), Mario Lochert (Visions of Atlantis), Dominik Sebastian (Edenbridge), Jan Vacik (Dreamscape), and Urban Breed (Tad Morose). The band headed to Munich in late 2014 to lay down tracks for their debut album. The resulting As Daylight Breaks was released the following year via AFM Records. The band showed little interest in slowing down, splitting their time between tour dates and studio sessions, and in 2016 they dropped their sophomore long-player, Mirrorworld. A third full-length effort, Magic, arrived the following year.

One of the themes of this album is dawn, new beginnings, taking the first steps on a new journey and so on, and many of the sounds used on it were recorded early in the morning. Several feature water, be it rain or a gently burbling forest stream. The recorded sounds were then processed in various ways to create soundscapes which hopefully have something of the life and organic feel of nature in them. A commentator online once described Snufmumriko music as "soundscape cloth woven from field recordings" and Ingmar Wennerberg think that’s an apt description.
