"Where do we go from here, what kind of sound do we follow?" muses Terry Hall on "Way on Down," a track from the Fun Boy Three's eponymous debut album. It was a question on numerous lips, ever since Hall and his fellow ex-Specials Neville Staples and Lynval Golding announced the formation of their new group. It's doubtful that anyone came even close to the correct answer.

Released at the same time as Dayton/Cutie Pie, this two-for-one release from the U.K.-based Expansion label combines the third and fourth albums from Dayton: Hot Fun (Liberty, 1982) and Feel the Music (Capitol, 1983). Perhaps due in part to switching between labels that weren't among the best outlets for R&B, the group never gained much commercial traction, but they recorded a considerable amount of excellent sophisticated funk. Much of it can be heard here, including the standouts "We Can't Miss," "Meet the Man," "Out Tonight," and "The Sound of Music" - the last of which stands up to anything driven by Leon Sylvers III (Shalamar, the Whispers, Dynasty) or Jacques Fred Petrus (Change, High Fashion, the B.B. & Q. Band).

Label: BMG, EVA | Release Year: 1997

The EVA labels were a group of sisterlabels made for compilations and Best-Of albums released as joint ventures between the national divisions of EMI, Virgin and Ariola. The label became active in 1984 but is now defunct in all countries. Early EVA albums were released with the logos of the three individual labels. Sometimes the label name EVA was not mentioned on those releases. Active from 1985 until 1997. In 1990 the labels Warner Music, Sony Music and Phonogram/Polydor founded Magnum as its counterpart.
