Possibly Waits' most unusual work. It is a very strange mix of polka, rhumba, jazz, folk, blues, rockabilly, lounge, etc. It's pretty much impossible to describe this album in words, it needs to be listened to to be understood (if understood at all). It is highly experimental. His orchestration is fiercely imagined and masterfully presented. It is one of those albums so rich, vivid, bizarre, and beautiful that you realize you were just in the hands of a genius when it finishes playing. In my opinion it is probably the quintessential Waits album, because it shows so much of his range, perfectly capturing the humor, tragedy, poetry, and charm of his music. It should also be noted that I believe this to be, next to Alice, his darkest album. There's a very creepy and brooding tone throughout.

When musicians in the New York folk scene of the 1960s grew tired of city life, they decided to "get it together in the country." They headed for Woodstock-not the site of the infamous music festival of 1969 but to the Catskills, to Bearsville, to Woodstock proper. Counterculture revolutionaries like Janis Joplin, Richie Havens, and Paul Butterfield got "back to the land," turning the once sleepy hollow into a funky Shangri-La. Small Town Talk tells the town's musical history, from its earliest days as a bohemian arts colony to its ongoing life as a cultural satellite of New York. Woodstock, the bucolic artists' enclave, has earned its place in rock music history; Small Town Talk is a classic study of a vital music scene in a magical place during a revolutionary time.

Newly updated to include his critically acclaimed post-millennial work, this look at Tom Waits–both the reality and the myriad myths–reveals how a self-taught, drunken hipster in roach-killers and a dirty beret has influenced a generation of musicians with his sound, warmth, and willingness to take chances.

Backed by a coterie of accomplished players, including the guitarist Marc Ribot, the bassist Larry Clark, and the drummer Richie Hayward, Tom Waits growls, warbles, and clowns his way through a succession of freewheeling live performances, recorded throughout Europe and the U.S. as part of a characteristically idiosyncratic concert film released in 1988.
Included are songs from his three groundbreaking early '80s albums, "Swordfishtrombones”, "Rain Dogs, and “Franks Wild Years."
