William Jackson of Exeter (17301803) was a painter and writer as well as a composer, but he has been, until now, something of a hidden treasure. As Timothy Roberts writes in his introduction to this first album of Jacksons music, his songs are rooted in English traditions, and if his harmonies rarely move beyond those of Corelli and Handel, Jacksons emphasis on sensibility also brings hints of early Romanticism. One contemporary observed that His melodies were pure and natural, resulting in music that is both elegant and charming. This recording brings two esteemed early-music stars into the Toccata Classics catalogue: Dame Emma Kirkby and Charles Daniels.

This recording is devoted to the works of a composer about whom we know practically nothing — neither his date of birth nor even his origins. All that we do know is that Giorgi held the position of maestro di cappella in San Giovanni Laterano in Rome in 1719 and that he ended his career in Lisbon, dying there in 1762.

Her voice is paralyzing. The sticky vibrato trickles across your eardrums. Her anguish hangs in the air, heaving against the weight of an industry which had all but discarded her remains somewhere along Hollywood Boulevard. "Are you satisfied?" she wails over heavy Led Zeppelin-style guitar and gorgeous strings, as she reveals the darkest and most sinister thoughts swirling inside her head. "These thoughts make me lonely," she whispers elsewhere on one of her album highlights, the aptly-titled "Are You Satisfied." The vocalist in question is none other than Jena Irene Asciutto, who had emerged from the titan of all singing shows, on the 13th season of American Idol.

Two years after scoring hits with "Fame" and "Out Here on My Own" (from the movie Fame), Cara finally released her debut album. Boasting strong R&B repertoire, reputable backing musicians, and solid production, the set nevertheless failed to garner further commercial success for the singer. It's a wonder how her emotive, driving rendition of the Four Tops' classic, "Reach out (I'll Be There)," and the titletrack, a dynamic power ballad co-penned by Cara with the venerable Bruce Roberts, didn't catapult her to a new level of stardom.

Callas's second studio recording of La Gioconda was made in 1959, six years after her last stage performances of the role, which in 1947 has been the vehicle for her Italian debut (at the Arena di Verona). The recording came at a turning point in Callas's life - when her relationship with Aristotle Onassis led to her separation from her husband, Giovanni Battista Meneghini. Writing in Gramophone in 1960, Philip Hope-Wallace said: 'I simply cannot imagine anyone getting more out of the role than she does this time…the total effect is riveting.' Joining Callas were two young Italian singers destined for great careers: the mezzo-soprano Fiorenza Cossotto as her rival, Laura, and, as the sinister Barnaba, baritone Piero Cappuccilli.

Bellini's "Norma" is a classic of the bel canto tradition, combining lavish vocal splendor with a story of great passion and nobility. The title character in "Norma" is a role with emotions ranging from haughty to desperately passionate to vengeful and defiant. Italian soprano Fiorenza Cedolins is one of the most thrilling Normas of the younger operatic generation. Along with a distinguished supporting cast, including Sonia Ganassi as Adalgisa and Vincenzo La Scola as Pollione, this psychologically staged production by Francisco Negrin, conducted by Giuliano Carella, makes the belcanto tradition vivid and exciting.

For me, this recording represents the absolute epitome of bel canto singing, with Pavarotti spinning endless golden tone as Fernand and Fiorenza Cossotto showcasing that indomitable chest-voice as Leonora.
